We were looking for a night spot that was unassuming. Initially my hubby and I wanted a Jazz Cafe, but we decided against having to pay the cover charge and watch a show as we were a bit tired. We only had one night to get a little bit of the Philadelphia experience. So we looked up coffee shoppes. Instead, we were directed to an ecclectic hot chocolate shop. Now I love hot cocoa. I will order it much quicker than a coffee. But this was no regular hot cocoa drink. This was melted chocolate gold. And Don Rene made this concoction before our eyes, shaving off blocks of chocolate laced with salty caramel, and other gourmet confections. It was not watery, it was rich. He and his employee were so friendly. Like family. And it was a party like atmosphere, I even shook to the music of Santana. The place was intersting, not elegant, but like an Phily fun house. I initially thought Rene was Italian, Latino or a Latino mix like I am, but he is from France, where chocolate is sweet and fantastic.
Yes, I would call before coming by because although they will stay late if they know customers are coming, they sometimes, leave early when it seems all have gone home for the night when it is really late. The cafe is close to Geno's, so i suggest getting a "Whiz With" steak first and then strolling down for a hot chocolate to die for.
