“Crab boil in Center City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014 via mobile

Went for an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is easy to find and because of the time of day there were plenty of tables available. The service was excellent, our waiter was really nice and on top of everything. They have a great beer selection, both on tap and in bottles. We had the old school boil which included crabs, potatoes, corn on the cob and sausage. Just the right amount of food for two people. Overall a really good dinner and will definitely go back again.

“It's really South Street but let the masses think diff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Trip to the city...some biz and then planned trip to the Museum then dinner on the ann'y.

The Museum closes at 5? In July? Wow...so at 4 the bride and I are to decide to go in for 45mins then be ushered out or.....

Off to South Street...man, haven't been there in a while. Tuesday at 4:15---no issue getting a parking spot...couldn't believe how many doarded up empties there were...wow.....

Into the restaurant...just a couple doors up from Downey's. It's the old 2nd iteration of NOLA, then Mallorca...same basic interior...which is ok by me.

So 4:30, time for a beer! Good selection, great bar keep (Bill)...not much of a crowd (one other person) so he had some time...very friendly...and helpful

Started with some raw clams---a fav and one of the reasons went there. Philly has seafood that is Maryland like---which I think isn't good. I like the New England stuff---see some of my other reviews on clams/fish and color of correctly fried...yes fried damn it! Seviche isn't sea food!

Clams fresh---top necks...bride had the shrimp---on point prep...she applauded...happy wife happy life!

Some more suds then into the "courtyard"---picnic tables in an adjunct seating area...again-no crowd so she and I had a place for 6 to ourselves...outstanding.

Bride ordered lobster roll (her all time fav), I had a couple appetizers---clams in wine/garlic/butter, "Ho-Jo" style fried clams (not strips but more like chunks), fries, and corn on the cob. They have boils with crab and the traditional New England...next time we share that.

Roll was excellent...lots of meat, not too heavy on the mayo. She loved the fries.

The clams in the garlic melange not a fav honestly...too much garlic and wine...I make these at home with wine, chicken broth, the green part of scallions, a little garlic and some butter...I like mine better.

Fried clams were not right color---I love them when they are yellow or pale, pale gold. Can never find that outside of New England...but these were good. The bottom of the bowl they were in appeared mysteriously...one to consider for an order.

The fries.....meh. Bride likes them mushy, I prefer the Belgian style---crisp out, soft/fluffy and hot in. Also, they use copious amounts of sea salt. The corn...how can one screw that up...and they didn't---fresh and just out of the boiler...good adjunct.

Wait staff all looked about 9 yrs old (getting old) and everything described as awesome...ok term for the kids...but awesome was landing on the moon or the Yankees 1978 season! LOL...love to see the kids trying hard though.

Can see us there again for the "Traditional" boil (clam bake). Maybe this Fall on a crisp Sunday.

Ok, recommend---yes. The Bar mgr and overall Mgr were on premises, talked, told of the history, etc. Warm, welcoming, genuine hospitality...and that can erase a few flaws.

Try it...worth the $63.00 for dinner. Raw stuff $1.25/per---and buck a shuck for raw oysters from 5-?

Not the Ritz but damn fine place for atmosphere and some decent sea food.

“What fun and great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

Traveling with colleagues and found this place in the South Street area. We sat outside and had a great time sharing and eating off of each other's plates. We had the calamari which was terrific. One of my colleagues had some of the happy hour special oysters which she said were great and I took her word for! I shared the king crab legs and lobster grilled cheese. All very tasty! The drink refills kept coming and I don't think we ever had to ask for anything. Planning a return visit on my next trip!

One of the best Calamari dishes. Oysters were great. Awesome staff! Hendrix Gibson martini was off the hook!

“A MUST MUST MUST”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

First off we are big food snobs ecspecially when it comes to seafood. We went on 2/22/14. This restaurant is located at the very end of South Street near the pier. The area they are located in is filled with many store vacancies. So it can easily be overlooked. We were seated right away, they had a fresh oyster bar. It was very prettty inside. Right away we were offered water drinks the martinis were very good. We were givne oyster crackers and horseradish. The crown was not pretentious at all. We had the fried green tomatoes PERFECT as shrimp appetizer HUGE and Tasty. We had the mussels and chorizo the flavor and freshness was a party in our mouths and huge portions. We then shared the Crab Kingdom it was HUGE they crab was cooked perfectly and sweet and succlent. The service was immpecable and we found out later it was the owner waiting on us as well as another swet young man. The owners mother came over to wish us a happy anniversary and then comped some of our meal due it being our anniversary. Also the prices are beyond resonable. I can not wait to go back when blue crabs are in season!!!!
