“Ikea-decorated "suites."”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

The historic charm of the main house and common areas quickly evaporated when we were ushered into our "large extended suite," which was a long, skinny, one-bedroom apartment decorated 100% with cheap Ikea furnishings. The romantic weekend I had planned for my new love turned into an embarrassment for me. Plus the bathroom sink was clogged. How does that even happen, since the maid has to use the sink to clean it every day?

Room Tip: Do not book the large extended suite unless you like discount Swedish furnishings.

As soon as we walked in the door, it felt like we were taking a step back in time. We were greeted and given a tour of the property. Don't worry about not having an elevator, there aren't very many stairs and the staff will take care of your luggage. We stayed on the third floor in room 302. The whole place felt like you were getting to stay in a museum! Cookies are provided after each maid service and every day at 3:00 (usually cookies are remaining when you get back in the evening) and they are to die for!! There is also a restaurant called the "M" next door and it is delicious. Their menu changes frequently, but everything is great and hotel guests get 10% off their order! The location was fantastic. It's right downtown next to the liberty bell and other museums as well as Jim's Steaks, a famous Cheesesteak eatery. Everything is within walking distance. Can't say enough about this fabulous hotel...

My husband and I recently spent 2 nights at the Morris House Hotel. It was conveniently located across the street from Wills Eye Institute where my husband was having eye surgery. We stayed in a suite which was very roomy and had a kitchenette. Although this is a historic building, the rooms had been nicely updated. We were not in the main building which gave us privacy. The outside door to the building we were in was accessed with a key so it felt secure. The rooms were exceptionally clean and well maintained.

The staff was very accommodating, especially Lowell at the front desk. Room rates were very reasonable and included what was described as a continental breakfast. I expected coffee and a roll but the breakfast selection was very generous as well as diverse. It included quiche, fresh fruit, and a charcuterie as well as the usual cereals and sweet rolls.

Dinner at their restaurant M was fine dining with a lovely atmosphere. I would certainly recommend this hotel and restaurant. I hope to stay here again but this time for a getaway to Philadelphia.

The Morris House Hotel is one of the most beautiful gems in a prime location in downtown Philadelphia.
The Morris House sits street front at 225 South 8th Street and is only steps away from all the historical tourist attractions.
The staff is extremely attentive and will see to your every need.
Be aware, there is no elevator, but the staff will carry your bags to the most gorgeous room to which you have been booked.
Walbert and Lowell were especially helpful during my stay at the hotel.
The rooms are amazing. Mine was not in the main house, but just a few steps across the beautiful bricked courtyard. I had a gorgeous bedroom and a sitting room that overlooked the city. The bathrooms are so spacious and beautifully done with tiled floors, tons of counterspace for your makeup bag, etc.
Everything was pristine clean and guess what!? You get homemade ginger cookies on your pillow everyday.
The breakfast is amazing. Everything made in the hotel kitchen which includes a beautiful Quiche, lovely cheeses, fresh fruit, homemade pastries, breads and homemade jellies, honey...and herbal teas.
There are so many lovely restaurants near the hotel...be sure to ask the concierge their suggestions for an unforgetable dinner.
The Wilkes Eye Institute is right across the street and the Pennsylvania Hospital is a couple blocks away and around the corner on Pine Street.
You will find upscale shopping just steps away from the hotel and don't miss out on dinner at Talula's Garden right behind the hotel.
I cannot recommend this gorgeous hotel enough!

Room Tip: I had no issues at all and my room was above the restaurant. I heard nothing at night once I was in...

Absolutely delightful. From the moment I walked through the door the staff made me feel welcomed and comfortable. The concierge took the time to take me through the history of the building, which for a visitor not only to Philadelphia but to the USA was wonderful and most welcome.
The room we stayed in was just gorgeous, I really have nothing but praise for The Morris House Hotel.

My friend and I really enjoyed our stay at Morris House Hotel. The rooms were nice and kind of charming. Rooms out to the street are not noisy, breakfast was great. Once we went to have breakfast at the restaurant, once we enjoyed room service, which was really nice. The only improvement I would recommend is a sign to find the hotel at night. We got a little lost once driving circles until we found the hotel. All in all, I highly recommend this hotel.

Built in 1787, the Morris House Inn is a delightful historic property in the Washington Square district of Philadelphia. It has 15 rooms in two buildings, the main house and an annex where M Restaurant is located (hotel guests get 10% off their restaurant bill). We stayed in Room 402, directly above the restaurant and facing the courtyard. It is described as a Large Extended Suite and includes a small kitchen, sitting area with foldout couch and bedroom with a luxurious queen-sized bed. The sleekly modern bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub and separate shower, and is appointed with thoughtful amenities like bath salts and makeup remover wipes.

Lowell greeted us warmly upon our arrival and gave us a tour of the facilities, offering to provide assistance in any way he could. I subsequently emailed him a spreadsheet listing all the attractions we intended to see, not once but twice, and he printed it for me.

One of the first things we encountered when we checked in was afternoon tea featuring three kinds of homemade cookies. The chocolate chip were described by my son thusly: "A land of chocolate exploded in my mouth. BEST... COOKIE... EVER!" The ginger cookies were also very good, and are a novel alternative to the usual nightly chocolates on the pillow. A pitcher of hot chocolate was available along with the usual envelopes. In a detail I found particularly thoughtful, half and half was provided in addition to yucky Coffee Mate. The Inn has Keurigs both in the common area and in the rooms, so if you have a particular favorite you might want to bring some K-cups from home. Then again, the brewed coffee at breakfast is absolutely heavenly!

Speaking of breakfast, it's included and served from 7 to 10am each morning in the warm, light-filled dining room/library. I would call it enhanced continental as it's more than just pastries, and everything is house-made. Offerings also include excellent granola, salami, sliced cheese, quiche and fruit. When we arrived at 9:30, Lowell encouraged us to let him know if anything needed replenishing.

We were in Philadelphia at one of the worst possible times weather-wise, with bone-chilling cold and sleet. The location of the Morris House allowed us to visit Washington Square, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center and the U.S. Mint on foot with minimal inconvenience and discomfort.

One of the great things about the Morris House is that it is a historic property but with plenty of modern conveniences, most notably the Wi-Fi. This is a must-have for us as my son is all about the technology. He really loved the room's iHome dock as well.

Drawbacks here are minor. Our suite's bathroom was adjacent to its front door, with the kitchen, living area and bedroom following in that order. Therefore you must pass through the living area if you're going to the bathroom from the bedroom. If there is someone in the sleep sofa that's a light sleeper, this can be a problem, especially since the wood floors squeak. Also, there is no parking on site, although a discount is available at the garage across the street. Evenings can be a little loud if you're atop the restaurant, but the noise is typically done by 10:30. Finally, there is no elevator, but the staff happily assists with luggage so it's not a big deal if you're capable of climbing stairs.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are the quietest.
