As a steak enthusiast, I've had meals at all of the top steakhouses. Smith & Wollensky is in the upper echelon, and the Philadelphia location is no exception. The restaurant is housed in the same building as the Rittenhouse Hotel (valet parking is available through the hotel and is overpriced, but then again parking in Philly is overpriced everywhere). Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. He took great care of us all night, offering to create samplers of various appetizers and helping with entree and dessert choices. Everyone in our group ordered filet mignon at varying temps...and everything was PERFECT. It seems simple that a steakhouse would serve your steak medium-rare when you ask for it that way, but I've been to way too many that can't get it done right. The steaks were big, juicy, flavorful...I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. But save room for dessert. They have gigantic cakes that are perfect for sharing after a big meal.

“Overpirced and underdone”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2005

They must have had a bad night when I was there. For all the hype, you get a better steak at the Outback, and certainly less than $30 bucks. The service was good, as they were probably anxious to get me out of there after I sent back the steak twice.
There were a lot of suits on exppense accounts there- spending the company's money on overpriced food and wine. We ordinatry folks can do a lot better elsewhere.

“Great meal with a better view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2005

My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic meal last night for our anniversary. If you plan to go for a special occasion, call a couple of weeks ahead of time (for midweek dining) and request a booth that overlooks Rittenhouse Square. It snowed the night we were there and it was very tranquil overlooking the park with the snow falling. Also, the booths give you privacy. We were seated immediately and treated to glasses of champagne from the hostess. If you are celebrating, always mention it when you make your reservation. Good restaurants will make a note of it and more often than not, it is recognized in one way or another. Appetizers, salads and sides are large enough for two and the staff have no problem splitting them up for you. The entrees were cooked perfectly, mine was the best filet mignon I've had in a long time. Our wine and water glasses were always full and several staff members came along to check how things were. These things seem like they should be standard at an upscale restaurant but it's surprising how often they aren't. If possible, go on a weeknight, less crowds means the staff can take extra time with you. Through conversation with our waiter, we were redirected from our original wine choice to a wonderful bottle and we heard a funny story about his dog. Bottom line, when you want a good meal there are plenty of restaurants in Philly but when service is important as well, this restaurant was tops!
