We selected this hotel based on its TA reviews and we found that the positive reviews were warranted. We were very interested in the Old Philadelphia history, and you can’t find a better location for this than the Hotel Monaco. It is across the street from Independence Hall and the Independence National Historic Park, right in the middle of Old Philadelphia. I would describe the hotel’s décor as very hip and artistic. We found that every employee was highly professional and friendly, and provided a very high level of service. The rooms are good sized, quiet and very nice high-end bedding. We tried both the rooftop bar and the first floor restaurant and found both to be very good. There are a couple of reasons why I would give this hotel 4 instead of 5 stars. The first room we were given spelled of cigarette smoke. We declined the room and were immediately given another with no delay. Although the second room was generally clean, there were a number of little things missed by housekeeping that were annoying (no soap, light bulb out, no spare toilet paper, safe locked shut). All of these things were rectified within 20 minutes, but we were surprised to find the issues at all. The last issue is one that is a pet peeve of mine. This very hip hotel has fallen prey to the fad that many places have fallen to in the past 10 years, and that is that they play music much too loud in the bars and restaurants. The music is not in the background but in the foreground such that you have to raise your voice to talk over it to others at your table. I complained to the bar manager but was told that this is what most of the people want (which I don’t believe). I was disappointed with his weak response. Despite these minor issues, this is a very nice, high service hotel, where we will stay again on our next trip to Philadelphia.
