“Perfectly situated hotel...look no further.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

This was the 3rd time we have stayed at a Kimpton Hotel and we were not disappointed. The Hotel Monaco is housed in the Lafayette Building and from the minute you arrive you are greeted and pampered by the hotel staff. Our room on the 9th floor overlooked Independence National Historic Park...Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell Center & the Visitor's Center was visible from our window.

I requested a goldfish for our room, but had to call the front desk to remind them.

Our room was a good size and nicely decorated with different patterns and colors. The king bed was really comfortable and inviting. The bathroom had a few problems...the shower curtain did not come down to the bottom of the doorway so water was splashed onto the floor and the bath mat. The sliding door was noisy when opening and closing it. There is a safe on a high shelf in the closet, iron/ironing board, umbrella, exercise mat, robes & slipper socks.

If you are a Kimpton member you get free wi-fi and can take up to $10 from the mini bar...check you statement when you check out since we had charges on the bill which had to be removed.
There is a Business Center on the 2nd floor where you can print out your boarding passes for free. There was a newspaper at our door during the week. There was coffee and fruit water in the lobby.

We spent some time each day in the Red Owl Tavern to wind down after a busy day of sightseeing, It was very popular. We also went up to the Stratus Rooftop Bar & Lounge for a drink and appetizers. This bar is very popular in good weather and they blocked off an elevator for access to it. We had to tap our key card in the elevator to get to our room. A good security measure.

They have a free wine hour every night which again is very popular. On the weekend all seats were occupied and some people had to stand. I was surprised that some people took their dogs down and some were very large dogs. One woman had 2 with her. The hotel is pet-friendly.

We walked almost everywhere, but there is plenty of transportation. If you are a senior just show your Medicare Card and you ride for free otherwise it is $2. We took the Phlash Trolley from the Visitor's Center to Reading Terminal Market, City Hall, Penn's Landing and the Rocky Steps. It also goes by the Rodin Museum and The Museum of Art. Ask for the map & schedule for the Phlash in the Visitor's Center. We walked to South Street, Society Hill and The Betsy Ross House.

We also took the trolley to Rittenhouse Square & had a nice lunch at Parc Restaurant overlooking the park at Rittenhouse Square. We sat at an outside table and we both had the mussels & fries...delicious.

They were having a celebration for Memorial Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Washington Square which was very nice.

We requested a wake-up call on the day we had to leave for the airport, but never got it. Luckily we woke up in time ourselves. We were offered a free breakfast which we accepted. Also, when we checked in early the girl asked for our cellphone number to call us when the room was ready...no call. When we got to the hotel after 3 pm she said I tried to call you..unfortunately she wrote down the wrong number. I am sure these glitches were not the norm for this hotel. We would stay there again if we return to Philly.

We took the Liberty Shuttle to the hotel and back to the airport...$10 per person each way. The taxi was about $32.50 for 2 people each way.

This hotel was the perfect choice for our stay, May 30-June 2, 2013. We were in town for a family wedding & this was our first time in Philly. We have stayed at the Hotel Monaco in Chicago several times and love it, so when I saw there was one in Philadelphia it seemed like a no-brainer. My husband and I traveled along with my mother & brother. We requested, and were granted, adjoining rooms. We had a king room, and they adjoined in a queen-queen room; both were comfortable, and surprisingly spacious for a city-center hotel. Being a Kimpton in-touch member, our rooms were upgraded to park-view which was a pleasant surprise! Beautiful view of Independence Hall & the Liberty Bell park.

Staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, even though they were extremely busy and there were several meetings/events going on at the hotel each day were there. The nightly hosted wine reception is a nice way to start happy hour, as well as meet other hotel guests. The Red Owl restaurant on site was wonderful - we had Friday drinks & appetizers, and Sunday breakfast there. Staff there were friendly as well.

Location is great, you can walk to many of the must-see sights. Lots of restaurants, bars, shopping and historical sights within a 1-mile radius. We even got adventurous and walked a few miles to the art museum to run up the "Rocky" stairs and see the statue (we took the trolley back).

This is a hotel that takes care in its attention to detail - that is evident in everything from the berry/mint or lemon/cucumber infused water available in the lobby, to the stylishly-eclectic room furnishings. There is also a lengthy list of "forgotten items" that they will supply you if you forgot something on your trip - I was provided (good!) bandaids for my shaving accident - my husband forgot his contact solution, and was given a nice sized bottle of a brand-name solution. It's the little things that set Kimpton hotels like Hotel Monaco Philadelphia apart from the rest. If we ever find ourselves back in Philadelphia, we will not hesitate to stay again!

Room Tip: Get a park-view room if you can, it's worth it!

A lovely hotel right by Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The rooms are superbly and zanily appointed. We upgraded to a King Spa, which came with a lovely tub. Especially welcome was the wonderfully comfortable bed, something we were hoping for as we were traveling long distances the next day. And the Red Owl Tavern, right in the hotel, made for a superb breakfast.

I have stayed at many hotels across this country and I would rate this one as one of if not the best. Location is perfect. It is within walking distance to all sorts of attractions. The staff was top notch, the decor was beautiful. I will stay there anytime I am in the Philly area. If you join the Kimpton rewards you will get free WI-fi and $10 out of the mini bar! We were there partly for a conference and that was handled perfectly. They are also pet friendly.

Room Tip: Our room was facing the park and was a corner room. LOVED the view. If I can't look out over the...

I would stay at this property again anytime. Service is friendly helpful and happy. Everyone wants to make sure your stay is the best it can be. The location is awesome right next to Independence Hall. The rooms are fun and uniquely appointed. A great couples or business hotel.

Room Tip: Higher for the view, and rooms in numbers 01 to 10 have the best views in my opinion

We spent a night at the Hotel Monaco in Phila. and were very pleased. The hotel is very upscale, with the friendliest, most helpful staff we've ever dealt with. Rooms were large and comfortable. If you sign up (free) for Kimpton's In-Touch program you get free wifi and $10 of free stuff from the fridge. What made the hotel even better is we got it for $105 on Priceline. We used the procedure recommended on www.checkbook.org and it worked great.

First class experience. Hotel is less than one year old. They created it out of a vintage landmark building. To say that the décor is eclectic would be an understatement, but it works for a great presentation. Room was very clean, quiet and comfortable. The staff was very courteous and helpful. Their evening hosted wine hour was very classy and was very much appreciated. We were there to visit several museums and the #38 bus which takes you to that area is right around the corner (short ride), Note, to their credit the City lets you ride on all public transportation free if you are 65+, just show the driver your Medicare card, no hassle. Nice city, hope to visit again soon and will stay at the Monaco.

Room Tip: Front of building gave room a very light and airy appearance. Street noise not discernible.

Green Features: They were very much into that, which is very commendable.
