This was the 3rd time we have stayed at a Kimpton Hotel and we were not disappointed. The Hotel Monaco is housed in the Lafayette Building and from the minute you arrive you are greeted and pampered by the hotel staff. Our room on the 9th floor overlooked Independence National Historic Park...Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell Center & the Visitor's Center was visible from our window.
I requested a goldfish for our room, but had to call the front desk to remind them.
Our room was a good size and nicely decorated with different patterns and colors. The king bed was really comfortable and inviting. The bathroom had a few problems...the shower curtain did not come down to the bottom of the doorway so water was splashed onto the floor and the bath mat. The sliding door was noisy when opening and closing it. There is a safe on a high shelf in the closet, iron/ironing board, umbrella, exercise mat, robes & slipper socks.
If you are a Kimpton member you get free wi-fi and can take up to $10 from the mini bar...check you statement when you check out since we had charges on the bill which had to be removed.
There is a Business Center on the 2nd floor where you can print out your boarding passes for free. There was a newspaper at our door during the week. There was coffee and fruit water in the lobby.
We spent some time each day in the Red Owl Tavern to wind down after a busy day of sightseeing, It was very popular. We also went up to the Stratus Rooftop Bar & Lounge for a drink and appetizers. This bar is very popular in good weather and they blocked off an elevator for access to it. We had to tap our key card in the elevator to get to our room. A good security measure.
They have a free wine hour every night which again is very popular. On the weekend all seats were occupied and some people had to stand. I was surprised that some people took their dogs down and some were very large dogs. One woman had 2 with her. The hotel is pet-friendly.
We walked almost everywhere, but there is plenty of transportation. If you are a senior just show your Medicare Card and you ride for free otherwise it is $2. We took the Phlash Trolley from the Visitor's Center to Reading Terminal Market, City Hall, Penn's Landing and the Rocky Steps. It also goes by the Rodin Museum and The Museum of Art. Ask for the map & schedule for the Phlash in the Visitor's Center. We walked to South Street, Society Hill and The Betsy Ross House.
We also took the trolley to Rittenhouse Square & had a nice lunch at Parc Restaurant overlooking the park at Rittenhouse Square. We sat at an outside table and we both had the mussels & fries...delicious.
They were having a celebration for Memorial Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Washington Square which was very nice.
We requested a wake-up call on the day we had to leave for the airport, but never got it. Luckily we woke up in time ourselves. We were offered a free breakfast which we accepted. Also, when we checked in early the girl asked for our cellphone number to call us when the room was ready...no call. When we got to the hotel after 3 pm she said I tried to call you..unfortunately she wrote down the wrong number. I am sure these glitches were not the norm for this hotel. We would stay there again if we return to Philly.
We took the Liberty Shuttle to the hotel and back to the airport...$10 per person each way. The taxi was about $32.50 for 2 people each way.
