Owner description: The Barnes Foundation houses one of the finest collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French painting in the world. An extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse provide a depth of work by these artists that is unavailable elsewhere. Established as an educational institution, the Barnes carries out its mission teaching classes in its galleries and Arboretum.

don't miss this museum - fabulous collection of Renoirs, Matisse, Picasso. Arranged in a very untypical museum style.

“So much artwork, so little time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

The pieces of art in this museum are unbelievable. The arrangement and sheer number of pieces make it seem like a different place every time you visit. My husband and I make a point to visit every time we are in Philadelphia.

“Fabulous collection in a new location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

We had visited the Barnes in its previous home in Merion and this was our first visit to its new location on the parkway. The new building is stunning and the collection, hung just the way it was in the house, somehow seems larger. It is a veritable treasure trove of Renoirs, Matisses, and Cezannes with some Modiglianis and Picassos tossed in plus a few more contemporary works by Glackens and Pendergrast. There are ceramic bowls and occasional chests and other bits of furnture under the works plus a myriad of pieces of hardware on the walls--hinges and clasps and locks. Seeing the entire collection is one visit is a bit dizzying since there is so much to take in that the eyes become saturated. On my next visit, I would choose a few select rooms to focus on. Since the paintings themselves have no labels, there are laminated sheets in each room that identify them.

We also had lunch in the cafe and visited the shop. The cafe has big windows and the menu selections were not numerous, but we enjoyed the tasty crab cakes and the hot smoked salmon. There is an ample-sized parking lot adjoining the building.

“Sold out for two days. No tickets available”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013 via mobile

Couldn't even get in for over two days. If you want to visit then you have to buy tickets way in advance. very disappointing. I am used to visiting museums worldwide and this has never happened. And we are speaking general admission - not a special exhibit
