“Formal and Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

We stayed at The Inn At The Union League for a wedding in December and mostly loved it. While the rooms were not what you'd call modern, they were comfortable. The service at the fitness center was outstanding and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. They saved me a bunch of money by setting me up with a private cab for a trip out to the suburbs. There were 2 or 3 different bars, including a cigar bar, and there were 2 lunch and dinner restaurants which were, unfortunately, booked solid. However the concierge took good care of us and arranged an excellent meal for us at Davios. The location was excellent with many great restaurants within walking distance. It was also very reasonably priced. The coat and tie requirement for the 2nd floor was different but made for a nice atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask to be told the exact kind of room you are getting. Some are larger and nicer than others.

My husband is handicapped & when the cab driver left us off at the front door with its massive steps we were a bit put off....a staff member standing near the huge doorway inside told us that the correct way to enter was off the side entrance....wish the cab driver had known as that was the address given to us & evidentally not the correct one. There was no offer to help us with the bags & getting to the right area for check-in! It was a 'do it on your own'.....
Other than that less than grand reception, our room was very roomy & nice - the drapes were closed for a reason - NO VIEW! The appointments were all right, but with the lights off the room became very dreary! The floor staff were friendly & accommodating, & I found out later - no tipping required. Breakfast was very good once we found that it was 'seat yourself'. Dinner was in a banquet room & very good...
Our wkend was with a reunion group so we had lots of time to 'catch-up' with memories of the '60's.
Be sure to tell the staff when you are calling in to reserve that one of you is handicapped. It maybe that you will need them when entering as there are a few steps.

Room Tip: If the drapes are closed - they are closed due to NO VIEW! Check with staff if you are dissatisfied...

The Union League of Philadelphia has been modernized over the last 15 years and is now a vibrant and highly enjoyable urban oasis. Getting into the inn requires either reservations by a member or making use of a reciprocal agreement from a club you or someone else may already belong to. In the bad old days this was a fairly non-diverse and dying institution. That has changed and the inn now has a variety of great restaurants - in particular 1862 which may be the best restaurant in the city - a health club and floors of wonderfully restored period rooms. The room that I stayed in was comfortable but not overly luxurious. This is, though, not a place where you want to hang out in your room but really a place

We stayed here for a convention, and just loved the place. It has a very unique old world charm. Since this is an older place, the rooms are small, but impeccably appointed. The bed was a little soft for my tastes, but still everything you need in the room. Great old charm to the entire property, and the location for our purposes was awesome - close to so many historical sites. The cigar bar was by far the best place to just relax and have a drink. The formal restaurant provided a well complemented breakfast each morning. Evyerone was very nice, respectful of the hotel & its history, and of the guests! Enjoyed and will remember this stay and experience for a long time to come.

Was there for a business conference - good place, clean room, helpful staff, great location.
what i loved best is the cigar bar.
I eat a few times there, not in the high-end restaurant but in the bar. Food was delicious and priced well. My one complaint is the mattress. I had back pain after one night.

The Inn at the Union League left much to be desired. The reception and banquet rooms were beautiful and well appointed; unfortunately the beauty did not carry over to the guest rooms at the Inn. The room I stayed in was drafty, offered no privacy (as I could overhear every conversation in the hallway and I imagine that other guests could hear mine), and it overlooked a brick wall. For the money, I would rather stay at one of the many other beautiful Philadelphia City Center hotels.

You couldn't ask for anything more and the location was wonderful. Great area for walking and people watching. Though the Union League rules dictate business casual dress for the FREE delicious breakfast in their dining room (which for guys was collared shirts tucked in and khakis; for gals it was khakis with dress T-shirt - no logo) there was NO dress code for the Inn itself. Thus, if you came and went via the Inn entrance, you could wear shorts and t-shirts (which we did because it was 96 degrees out). And you could help yourself in any kind of dress to the continental breakfast available in the 4th floor lounge. As to staff and/or Union League members treating us poorly, I did not experience that at all. It was a wonderfully comfortable stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 412 which had 2 queen size beds. You can split the room easily with a friend or fa...
