“Charming boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2011

We had a lovely time in this charming boutique hotel. The staff was very friendly and accomodating to our needs and were happy to help us plan our time in Philadelphia. We stayed in the Presidential Suite which is perfect for special occasions and not as expensive as expected. The only negative was that it did not have a tub, but otherwise the bath and half bath were lovely. Very clean and comfortable.

This is a good choice for a very central, charming old hotel with very friendly staff. They offer the option of a hot breakfast for $8 (waffles, pancakes, omelets) and $4 for fresh squeezed juice and also include a nice continental breakfast. The only downside was my room which was 102 or 101. I asked for a room with a bit of a window after getting a terrible sub-basement room that seemed more suitable as a prison cell and the second one I got was only slightly better as the window was a tiny bit bigger but both rooms are sub-basement. If you book here, definitely refuse these rooms. It would have been a bit more tolerable but I was charged the same price as other rooms. I also arrived at 10:30 that morning but was told these were the only two rooms they would offer me even if I waited until after check out time which I did anyway (and they charge for late cancellation which this would have been). To add insult to injury, my room shared a very thin wall with the lobby bathroom. When someone used it at 5:30 am, I awoke thinking someone was in my bathroom. It was a bit terrifying until I was fully awake at remembered the lobby bathroom.

Room Tip: Do NOT accept rooms 101 or 102 unless they discount them.

We enjoyed our stay at the Rittenhouse 1715 for the following reasons:
1. It's a very pretty hotel and our room was lovely. Although the room was a bit small, it was very attractively decorated, extremely comfortable, quiet and very clean.
2. The staff were absolutely delightful and most helpful.
3. The location is one of the best in Philly. Lots of good restaurants and cafes nearby as well as really pretty areas to explore. A bit of a walk to the historic areas, but we managed it without any problems and we're in our 60's.
4. An easy and efficient guest computer service - best of everywhere we travelled.
5. Delicious cookies for the hungry traveller (unfortunatley we didn't have time to enjoy the wine and cheese with other guests but it's a lovely service to have available).

It was a joy to return to the Rittenhouse 1715 at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

My only complaint is the breakfast. Unlike other reviewers I found it unsatisfactory. That makes me sound ungrateful given it's classified as 'complimentary'. However, breakfast would be factored into the room rate and as such is nowhere near the quality and standard set by every other part of this hotel. I think management should cast a more critical eye over the breakfast including the quality of food on offer, its presentation and ensuring stocks are replenished (eg empty jam jars etc). It's lovely to have pretty crockery and charming wait staff but if the food and its presentation are sub standard, the whole thing 'misses'.

Despite this complaint/suggestion, I would definitely recommend Rittenhouse 1715 to others.

the hotel is in a good location and the rooms are nice. Parking is a nightmare-you park yourself several blocks away. We almost got ripped off by the staff-we left for coffee and unexpectedly returned several minutes later. We found a member of the staff opening our door with a key (not the maid).

. . . but I'll try anyway. My family stayed at the Rittenhouse 1715 Hotel for two nights; two of my children my wife and I were attending the wedding of our oldest daughter--a very special occasion. The 1715 staff were lovely people--kind, polite, smiling, immensely helpful. They treated us like visiting royalty. (Eat your heart out, William and Kate!) Every nook and cranny of the charm-radiating little hotel was filled with welcoming detail: fireplaces in most rooms, cozy furniture, private spaces, a quaint cafe. Rooms were perfect; the location was ideal. I've traveled a lot, and this is one of my favorite hotels.

This past weekend we stayed, for the second time, at the Rittenhouse 1715 --- not to be confused with the larger but nearby RITTENHOUSE HOTEL. RH 1715 is a small (maybe 20 room) bed and breakfast style inn on a quiet street just off Rittenhouse Square Park. We love the quiet location, the proximity to great restaurants and the safe walking area. The furnishings are top of the line and the bathroom is spotless. The complimentary breakfast was a great way to start the day off with scones, coffee, juice and fruit. And the complimentary "happy hour" with wine and snacks in the parlor was a great way to meet other guests and also to unwind before going out for dinner. The staff at the Inn is so incredibly friendly and helpful, offering cookies, umbrellas and even offering to pick up a pizza at nearby Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza one snowy night. Our only complaint...the rooms were a bit warm for us (we like to sleep without much heat)...but this was solved with an open window and a small fan which the staff brought to us. Our son is in college at UPENN and we hope to make this our "regular" spot for the next four years! There is a lot across the street for parking your car, but a cheaper garage just one street over at the Latimer Garage.
We enjoyed Saxby's Coffee Shop nearby, Alma's Cuban Restaurant, Pietros Italian (very affordable), and we hear Barclay Prime is great for steaks.

Room Tip: If you stay on the ground floor your room may not have clear glass window panes to see out. Windows...
