“very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

We were very disappointed. Waited a very long time to be served and for the food. The appetizers were barely edible, especially the calamari. The real shocker though came when they served us the soups, the salads, and the pasta: they were salty to the point of vomiting, as if someone was running wild in the kitchen with a giant bottle of salt spoiling dishes. The staff did not seem surprised and swiftly replaced the dishes. Later on, someone whispered to us that actually the Chef had recently left and since then an apprentice with questionable qualifications was running the kitchen. It was astonishingly bad especially for a Garces restaurant. Best of Philly 2012 ???

“Bring a big roll or leave hungry”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

The good: delicious food, a lot of accouterments made in-house. Cheese were some of the best in the city for an upscale restaurant. Cheese pairings were sublime, including honey, mustard, and some other cheese side-cars that escape me. I liked the atmosphere with the market side-by-side with the dining room (partition separated) - mix of European small restaurant and south Philly bodega. Service was very attentive, if not a bit overly so.

The bad: portions are terribly small, and despite quality offerings, are overpriced even for this foodie neighborhood. Clients and I shared a bunch of apps and entrees tapas style to complete the meal, but we eventually moved on because we needed some beefier (not a pun) meals. Wine by the glass tasted like it had been open overnight - flat and boring. Bottles were better, though small selection of very narrow profiles for both white and red.

“Delicious food”

Great atmosphere and service. The food was delicious but the portions were small. Very high class restaurant. I would definitely come back because the food was very unique and tasted great.

“Great cheese pairings and an even better meal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

I went here today with four co-workers, we went for an outing relating to work as we work in a cheese shop in a local upscale grocery store. It was awesome! We were toying between Tria and here as one of my co-workers spoke highly of both, I wasn't disappointed with our choice. Since there was 5 of us and we wanted to try cheeses, we each picked a cheese to share and each came with a house made condiment of choice or you can let the chef pair it, go with that, they know what they are doing! We tried the Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue with Chocolate Hazelnut, the Ermesenda paired with Roasted Garlic Dulce de Leche, (these 2 were tied for my favorites and fantastic pairings!!), Harbison, Kunik and we ordered Cana de Oveja. I can't remember the exact pairings but I know we had the Blueberry Jam, Cranberry Chili Jam & Truffle Lavender Honey...all were great! In addition to the cheese we tried the house made Potted Duck under the Charcuterie section, WOW! Very comforting, my co-worker said it was like a left over Thanksgiving turkey sandwich on the house made croutons that they serve it with. Try the potted duck with the house made Cranberry Chili Jam! After the cheese and charcuterie we had lunch, I had the Lyonnaise Salad, I'm a huge duck fan and this was a perfect lunch, the poached egg on top made it! Not too much, not too little, just right! My co-workers had respectively the Moules Frites(....you must dip the fries in the broth!), the GTC Burger, the Roasted Turkey sandwich and another Lyonnaise Salad, everyone was happy. After, 3 of us had the pressed coffee...delicious! Highly recommend!

“Hit and Miss”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

We've visited Garces several times for dinner and had a great experience, so we decided to try it for a late Saturday lunch. The restaurant is a casual Euro-style bakery, deli and soup place, featuring a truly impressive cheese counter. It alao has the advantage of an on-premise state wine store so you can order first and then pop into the store to get wine to match. A big plus.

Service was great, with a very knowledgeable and attentive staff who clearly understand the menu. That said, they were let down by an erratic performance from the kitchen. The French Onion soup had so much bread that it just turned into a soggy mess and the heirloom tomato special was anything but, comprising of almost taste-free local tomatoes. For main course the Margarita pizza was a big hit, as was the Cuban Classico panini. However , the panini Martadello, which was mozzarella, pepper aoli and ham was greasy, although the accompanying chips were super.

It may be that the kitchen just had an off day, but on the basis of this meal I wouldn't return for lunch, although would try dinner again because of past experiences.
