“You will wish you could cook”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is a must see - but frustrating attraction for anyone who can not buy and go home and cook.
I have been a frustrated traveler in many cites. Every thing is so fresh, and looks so good- all you can think of is buying and cooking!
That being said, take time to enjoy the street, and perhaps buy lunch provisions or a hotel food stash.
The market is a Philadelphia experience. If you can go on a Saturday morning you will get real taste of city life.

I have visited often.. Will just pick a month

“A shadow of what it used to be”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Hadn't been here for over 30 years. It is now in a bad neighborhood and is dirty and smelly. Most of the "Italian" storefronts have been replaced with Vietnamese ones. No longer a feature of Philly, unless you just want to go to Geno's or Pat's for original cheese steak hoagies.

“Interesting Market - bad gelato”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

This is an interesting place to spend an hour or two. As others have said some of the Italian-ness is slowly leaving and being replaced by other nationalities but it still has a busy market feel about it. There are several large murals to see, lots of fruit and vegetable stalls, lots of delis, butchers/meat suppliers of various kinds (including the usual pork, poultry, sausages as well as the more exotic including python and kangaroo), cheese shops, pasta shops and places to eat or relax with a coffee. There are also shops selling other cheap goods like caps, shoes other miscellaneous items and an information centre for the market.
Our favourite shop was Fante's that sells all manner of kitchen utensils, many that we have never seen before, and at reasonable prices. We just wished our baggage allowance on our return flight was more so we could have bought more things. They also sell tea and coffee to brew at home or you can have some there.
Our biggest disappointment was the blood orange gelato at Anthony's gelato that tasted like it had been made with Tang rather than real blood orange juice. It tasted nothing like real gelato or real blood orange.
What we enjoyed seeing were the fruit and vegetable stalls in the street, the murals, the neon signs for the various shops and the various goods for sale in the windows including awesome looking sausages, tasty cheeses and a large variety of Italian food products.
It is a little out of the way but worth visiting on a morning where you find you have some spare time and enjoy markets. If you have limited time in Philadelphia then I would recommend you visit Reading Terminal Market instead. We visited here midweek mid-late morning and found free parking on a side street for 2 hours.

“Great day at the Italian Market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

We live about 1.5 hours outside philly and have been meaning to come to the Market for many years. We finally came to town for the day specifically to walk around in the market. We were very happy with the market as a whol and as a bonus happened to show up the day of the fesitval. It was great. the variety of shops and markets was very enjoyable including a visit to the gluten free bakery. Will try to schedule a revisit for the near future and revisit all the shops once again. If you enjoy a bit of italian experience - spend some time just strolling along and enjoy the market.

“A fun side stop”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

It's hit and miss in this market. Out of all the stores on these streets, about 30-40% are italian. While the restaurants can be a little pricey for lunch, there are plenty of sandwich shops to pick from and if you can transport, the homemade pasta is a great gift to take back home.
