“Hip and yummy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

While noisy this is a lively and excellent restaurant. Had a delicious meal and the best rice pudding I've ever had
Very good service Pretty big menu plus specials. Good size, I.e., not huge, portions

“Vibrant atmosphere, high caliber food, solid value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Enthusiastic service, neat space, cool menu. Strong pasta, strong appetizers, good beer list, and the "Salted Butter Semifreddo Sundae with maple syrup and pears" was off the charts good.

“Mon Amis! A Roman Amada”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

We had two fantastic restaurant experiences over the course of a couple of days recently. The first was an incredible meal at Heirloom in Chestnut Hill prepared by chef/owner Al Paris and his special guest in the kitchen, Georges Perrier. Yes, that Georges Perrier.

And then the next night, we had what was such a surprise for both of us – a super meal at a very reasonable price at one of the Vetri restaurants – Amis.

It bills itself as a Roman-style trattoria. It reminded us of the kind of value you can get an one of the Jose Garces restaurants, Amada. We went the route of a handful of smaller plates and split an entrée. We were pleasantly stuffed and it all came in for about $110 – including the three glasses of very nice wine we had/split.

We started with a mix of house-made salumi – delicious. Almost melted in your mouth. We then had quail in celery root, a fine eggplant caponata bruschetta and then roasted pumpkin with mozzarella. We wondered if these unusual matches would work – they did.

Finally, we took a calculated chance on one of the specials. Our waiter (who was perfectly attentive and very knowledgeable) told us that the kitchen that day had secured a 130 pound pig from a nearby farm and was preparing several different dishes. The one we had was an entrée of meat from the pig’s head and pasta in a light cream sauce, with a healthy amount of parmesan cheese mixed in. It was incredible.

We like to go to Amada for a quick bite to eat and a glass of wine after a tough work week. Amis will definitely be added to our list of similar places to go.

“DREAMING OF SWORDFISH MEATBALLS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Being a native New Yorker (and a foodie, or is that a given?), you have to know that when I dream of meatballs in another city, they are damn good! So good that I wouldn't be surprised if I hopped on the Amtrak for another food frenzy at AMIS in Philly. My husband and I were there for an Art show over the weekend and saw the name of this place written in an Amtrak magazine.
We called, got a reservation for 6:00pm and happily guzzled down six different appetizers or their Italian version of "Tapas". And we were stuffed. Did I mention we had dessert as well,
piggies that we are. A Sundae unlike any Sundae I've ever had - salt, maple syrup, pears....oh yes, I remember it well! I'd say to take the waiters suggestions (if not mine) and fill yourselves up on wonderful fresh locally sourced food. Yes, it's noisy and casual but if you know before you go....you can just focus on your taste buds. They will be in for a treat! (Oh yes, don't forget the roasted Pumpkin and Mozzarella)

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Very noisy, confusing menu, and expensive for the quality of food. The food was lackluster and added up to a lot with all the small plates. Not sure it is a good place for a large group. Also, the service was slow. I do like good food coming from San Francisco so was disappointed in the hype with this place versus the delivery. Would recommend Paradiso over Amis for sure.
