“Out of town on business”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

I travel frequently for business across the United States, more recently in the North East region, and have unfortunately lost count of the many cities, hotels and rooms that I've stayed in. There are certain things that do stand out over the years about my experiences...which include some pretty terrible hotels as well as hotels that really stand out in areas that make my trip enjoyable. Staying in downtown Philadelphia is tricky. It's a huge, older city which means that the buildings themselves have been redone but are confined within the footprint of older, smaller spaces. It also means that you are at the mercy of dreadful traffic, frequent sounds of sirens, older elevators and smaller rooms. The Hotel Palomar has been able to navigate all of those challenges and create a welcoming, beautiful space that is tastefully appointed and focused on customer service. You're welcomed with enthusiasm and invited to their nightly wine hour. I can name all the hotels that I have stayed at that offer nightly wine hour...and regardless of how and where it is served, the type of appetizers or the quality of wine...it seems to me that this type of gesture is welcoming and atypical. Another reviewer commented that it felt like a boutique hotel and that resonated with me. Boutique hotels feel more personal, are quirkier and in my opinion, more enjoyable. I go to Philly often...and will be rebooking at The Palomar.

First, let me start, I really have had nothing but negative experiences in Philadelphia over the last 30 years. So, I normally avoid this like the flu. However, my God Son got married there over the St. Patrick's weekend so off we went.
When we were in a traffic jam- there is always a traffic jam- our Garmin fried and we had to call Consierge who cheerfully assisted and got us there. Sign in front almost impossible to see as you approach.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the Valet staff- car taken to parking and then the Bell person Jonathon took over from there. It was afternoon reception and he secured complimentary glasses of wine for us before we even got checked in. Well, that was the story of the HOSPITALITY for our entire stay.
Everyone - everywhere - treated us like we were family they had not seen for some time.
The rooms are city hotel size, so not huge but very comfortable, very clean, they smell great, and are completely comfortable.
They have coffee etc. in the Lobby in the morning- the coffee is really good and they freshen often- great bag tea selection also.
We enjoyed dinner from In Room Dining the first night and the food was quite good- hot food was piping hot and cold food well chilled. The flavors were right on. Seared Salmon with Red Quinoa/ grilled Anise and Catch of the Day (shrimp, octopus, scallops/ papradelle pasta and broth, both were very tasty. We ordered the Truffle Popcorn to be our dessert- it was OK but not very much truffle. But, the next day in the Lounge it was great- mucho truffle- you should try it. They even delivered an extra chair to the room so we could both be comfortable while dining.
Very Civilized.
I have always laughed at the "City of Brotherly Love" because it is anything but that. However, we will return since we now know about this Hotel.
While we did experience a problem which was not the Hotel's fault Eric the Manager on Duty even took care of that for us.

We are making plans to go back already.

Room Tip: City view King rooms have a terrific view and it is literally just a couple dollars more. Also, the...

Richard D,

I am excited that we were able to renew some of your faith in the "City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection"

Our team really enjoys adding those special touches to make you feel like you are just enjoying time with family, and you even to get to have someone else make your bed and clean up the room. What more can you ask for?

Please come back real soon to visit your Palomar family. We promise to make you feel welcome all over again.

We stayed in the 1 bedroom suite. I called ahead to request a non-pet room as it is a pet friendly hotel. The hotel is conveniently located right in the center of town. Street parking was nearly impossible to find, but valet service was excellent. Room was a tad small, but clean. Bathroom was unnecessarily large for the space. We had a corner suite so it was very quiet.

Greeted like we were friends, fluffy robes, a spot by the fire in the lobby and flowing wine set the stage for a romantic and lovely stay-cation this past weekend. For In-Touch members, you can raid the mini-bar (up to $10 comped) and enjoy free WiFi. The vibe is warm and inviting, but just buzzy enough to make you feel a little bit hipper than usual, and the location was sublime, within walking distance to MANY great places. (We highly recommend trekking a few blocks to enjoy the piano bar at Dalia's Lounge on Lombard for the perfect ending to a romantic night.) Kimpton delivers again!

We visited Philadelphia before travelling on through Pennsylvania. The hotel was recommended by our travel agent and it suited us just fine. We arrived by taxi, so not a problem in getting out right in front of the hotel. The door staff and reception were very friendly and efficient and we were in our room in no time at all and with no fuss, and also in time for the nightly wine event. The room was spacious with good facilities and the bathroom was clean and well stocked with everything you would need, I particularly liked the lighting in the room as it could be dimmed as required, in particular I liked this in the bathroom! We then took ourselves off to the nightly wine hour, which was a nice touch, and gave us a chance to chat to some other guests and plan our activities. We stayed for four nights and the wine hours were much busier on weekends and did become a bit noisy and cramped, but it was fun anyway. We ate breakfast in the hotel every day and the staff were friendly, courteous and the food was ok too, perhaps a bit pricey but more convenient than going out for breakfast. The hotel itself is a beautiful building and very nicely designed with some interesting artworks too and feel like a boutique hotel. Despite the fact that the hotel was very central and on a busy road we slept really well and had no problem with noise from outside or from other rooms, which was a great relief! The hotel is in a great location to access central Philadelphia and close to many bars and restaurants and I would recommend it as a base if you are in Philly. We didn't have a car so can't comment on parking or valet service but everything else was good about this hotel, and the staff were very friendly and helpful too.

Room Tip: Our room was on the side of the hotel overlooking a church, maybe this made it a bit quieter than if...

Philadelphia was the last stop on our trip before flying home to Australia. We thought about staying at the Rittenhouse for a bit of a treat on our last two nights but booked the Palomar instead. In hindsight, perhaps not the smartest decision.

We drove to Philadelphia from Lancaster and got stuck in dreadful traffic due to a snowstorm. Trip took us about three hours. So we arrived at the Palomar post the storm and in the midst of Friday night traffic and discovered that you can't pull off the street to the hotel entrance. As the passenger, this meant I had to wait for ages before I could actually get out of the car. When the traffic was stopped I couldn't open the door, and when it was moving, I didn't dare.

Walked into a small lobby with very arty decor. Reception staff were efficient and friendly. Asked if we could upgrade to a suite because we were concerned our room was going to be a bit small. All suites booked apparently - the storm might have had something to do with that.

Were given vouchers for a free drink in the bar because we had missed the nightly wine event. I wasn't too fussed about missing the wine event anyway - the one we experienced in a Kimpton hotel in San Francisco was pretty average. Nice gesture though.

Up to our room which, as we had anticipated, was small. Lots of trendy touches but still small. Funky but impractical bedside tables and not a lot of room on either side of the bed. The bed faced into the bathroom which was tiny. If we wanted to do the right thing and reuse towels, there was insufficient room to hang them up to dry. The towels themselves were a bit thin and some were fraying at the edges - not a good look.

Went down to the bar for a drink and used our vouchers. The bar was really cold - it was obvious most guests were feeling it as all had their coats and wraps on.

The following evening husband sampled some of the wine at the wine event before we went out to dinner. The tiny foyer was packed with many others doing the same - serve yourself popcorn was doing the rounds. The space was way too small for hosting such large numbers. People were congregating right up to the reception desk.

Valet parking was expensive and off site and there was a queue so it took a while for our car to come on the day of our departure. We left Philadelphia for JFK feeling like we had missed an opportunity for a little luxury before we went home.

All said and done, the hotel is OK but not outstanding. I am not sure why so many rate it so highly - what did I miss? There was nothing particularly special in the service we received - they were good at their job but so they should be - it just wasn't five (or even four) star service. The drink vouchers were a nice touch but it was clearly standard practice. Nothing was unpleasant but nor was anything a standout and really, while modern, funky decor is kind of interesting, I still expect space, some thought given to practicalities and an emphasis on comfort.

We have stayed three times in six months at this Kimpton property and will return, primarily due to the comfort of the rooms and the excellent location, with convenient access to commercial areas, neighborhoods, wonderful restaurants, and train station. The hotel has an intimate boutique feel, with short hallway and small rooms, yet the property bustles with activity. Hotel staff are well trained and accommodating. Previous location of the restaurant on the second floor was less than desirable, but a recent renovation changed that to the first floor, just opening at the time of our latest departure. Lobby can be noisy and crowded but is still a pleasant place to park in front of the fireplace with a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. The property is generally quiet, with street noise not too intrusive, however, on two of our visits we experienced late night room neighbor noise, with once incident forcing us to call the front desk twice and find a different room for the next night (which was graciously arranged). On a different visit the neighbor was a group that conversed in deep voices late into the night, not loud enough to complain but loud enough to disrupt sleep. Guests here seem to be night owls. The standard rooms are a bit small for 2 people but still comfortable, with everything a guest would need right at hand. Elevators aren't that efficient and often filled with dogs, guests with luggage or cleaning/maintenance staff, and run slow or make stops on many floors, but that is only a minor inconvenience. As a regular Kimpton guest I have noticed room prices creeping up, with the best rates available only with non refundable prepayment. We booked a non refundable stay this last time only to be presented later with a better deal through a Kimpton email promotion sent to us but not available to due to our prepayment. We found this to be extremely annoying, especially since a requested upgrade was not provided. Though other good hotel choices are nearby usually for a lower room rates, the Palomar is an excellent hotel and worthy of its great reputation.
