“Classic boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011

Relatively spacious rooms for a downtown location, off Rittenhouse Sq. Very pleasant and attentive staff. Rooms clean and well appointed. Didn't get to the afternoon wine tastings but will try another trip. Close to great restaurants - next to the Davio's and 1 block from the Continental. Lacks a pool. The gym was nicely set up. Despite the "ecologically sensitive" HVAC system, we could set the room temperature easily and were surprisingly comfortable.

Room Tip: Getting a pricier room moves you up to a quieter floor.

Dear BixUS,

Thank you for writing a review of the Palomar. I'm glad you liked the layout of our fitness center, as that is also an important factor to me when staying at hotel properties! I hope you get to enjoy our wine reception during your next stay. We hope to see you again soon!

Regards,

Olivia

Very nice hotel overall---only one complaint: the shower head---very low flow of water, very little pressure---it was hard getting the shampoo out!

The hotel provides bathrobes; complimentary wines tasting between 5pm and 6pm--not sure if it includes weekends.

Loved the decoration...purples, grays, dark woods, white bedding--lovely small but comfortable room.

The Kimpton Hotel Palomar is in the centre of the city in an old district which has some lovely buildings including a very old Baptist church next door to the hotel. The hotel is a well refurbished 1920's building given a modern, funky interior decor with some of the wonderful original features retained such as the second floor lift lobby. The staff are very helpful and informative which is just as well as the room was devoid of any guide to the hotel and its services. There is a charge for the Wi-Fi but, if you log-on and join the Kimpton In Touch program, which is free, the Wi-Fi is free too. I guess it's a good way for the hotel to build its marketing data base.
While the public area decor is funky (eg; art works such as a sculpture of little men abseiling down the wall of the lobby) our room was slightly minimalist with a bed, table/desk and desk chair but no other chair and no tea/coffee making facilities. It did however have a minibar and you are given the key to this - this explained why the inside of the cabinet was quite dusty - the room maid does not have a key to the minibar cabinet.
The evening wine-tastings, which are free, were quite popular with all the guests and a nice touch which we greatly appreciated. The reception staff were very helpful in arranging a limousine hire for us as well as a river cruise and Talisa in particular was extremely helpful in assisting us to sort out some difficulties we were experiencing with our Westpac Bank by scanning and email our passports to the bank for us.
A really cool place, well situated and very nice. One we'd certainly recommend and would look forward to staying again ourselves.

My husband and I have stayed here for a weekend in Philadelphia alone, and we have stayed here with our two children, ages 6 and 10. It is in an amazing location - it is right near Rittenhouse Square and you can walk to plenty of wonderful restaurants, and you are close to the subway to travel around the city.
The decor of the hotel is very exciting - it is stylish, ecclectic and upscale. My kids loved the Ben Franklin painting on the ceiling when you enter, and they loved the Ben heads at the checkiin desk. The rooms are not huge, but ample space for moving around. Beds are sooo comforatble and the bathrooms are luxe.
There is a deal for free breakfast for kids with a paying adults, so we ate here each morning to start our day.
We got a competitive rate by booking in advance. It seems like it is priced similarly to the old, stuffy hotels, so I would much rather stay at this upscale, stylish hotel! The only down is that there is no pool, so if it is in the summer, that may be a bummer for some. But we came to visit history and the Franklin Institute, which is a MUST for kids (and adults - my hubby and I may return there on our next trip w/o kids!).

Room Tip: Request a room on a high floor far from the elevator banks.

Great location. Easy walking distance to restaurants and bars. I was there for business for a quick trip. Room service was fast. Rooms are cute, the bathtub is awesome (I got a spa king room.) Definitely room for two. Would be a fun weekend away for a couple. Price is amazingly good for what you get. Would definitely recommend.

very clean, great lobby, used the hotel for a bachelor party and ended up having a few drinks
in the lobby, it was very nice, nobody bothered us. We did that because the suite we had was not big. The suites are not spacious. Staff was great. Very centrally located, did not drive or cab anywhere, walk to everything.

Two night stay midweek at this sleek hotel. This was my first stay at a Kimpton and I was impressed with the eye for style, from modern/cool lobby, faux fireplace wallpaper in the elevators, hip colors on the bed and walls, and animal print bathrobes! I appreciated the free Wi-Fi (if you join the frequent stay club -- free membership), complimentary designer water and (apparently, according to the literature) $10 credit on the mini-bar. I also liked being able to dim the lights in the bathroom, which lets it act sort of like a night light (great for getting up in the middle of the night in an unfamiliar hotel room).

Another great touch (that other hotels ought to emulate): you can let them know your flight info the night before you depart, via the door hanger on which you can order in-room breakfast; when you check out, the front desk will have printed out your boarding pass. That's a very convenient service!

Downsides: no in-room coffee maker; and the weakest light ever in the hip desk lamp. (why bother with a desk lamp if it doesn't light the desk?) This made it difficult to work at the desk.
Also, I had the "do not disturb" sign on my door until about 11:30 AM, then left the room all day, removing my sign. When I returned late that night, the room had not been cleaned! By then, I was tired and still had to get some stuff done, so i didn't feel like calling for housekeeping -- which would have required me to vacate the room for awhile.

All in all, a pleasant stay. Next time, I will ask for a brighter desk lamp and try to avoid using the do not disturb door hanger.
