To call a very busy traffic circle a lovely spot it takes some special attributes. For the Eakins Oval it is the great center fountain, dedicated to Washington and founded by the Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania. The fountain and the monument are very allegoric. The Founding Father of the Nation is surrounded by the personifications of the four great rivers the Mississippi, the Potomac, the Delaware and the Hudson. The concept a bit like the fountains on Piazza Navona. Since Eakins was a Philadelphia painter it is only right that the Eakins Oval is located in the shadow of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
