“Adorned with the Washington monument.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

To call a very busy traffic circle a lovely spot it takes some special attributes. For the Eakins Oval it is the great center fountain, dedicated to Washington and founded by the Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania. The fountain and the monument are very allegoric. The Founding Father of the Nation is surrounded by the personifications of the four great rivers the Mississippi, the Potomac, the Delaware and the Hudson. The concept a bit like the fountains on Piazza Navona. Since Eakins was a Philadelphia painter it is only right that the Eakins Oval is located in the shadow of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

“The Washington Monument Makes It Worthwhile.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

Generally, Eakins Oval is little more than a traffic circle that makes for an easy pedestrian route between the Ben Franklin Parkway and the Museum of Art. What makes it a worthwhile stop is the Washington Monument. The number, variety, detail, complexity and artistry of the many included sculptures and reliefs is wonderful. Without the monument, you've got a nice traffic circle and a parking lot.

“The Oval: The New Shape of Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Eakins Oval formerly had a parking lot positioned in the middle. This summer you will find that same parking lot transformed into a pop up park that has tons of free programing for visitors of all ages. They offer live music, movie nights, beer gardens, art classes and story telling for children. They have some of the best food trucks in the city lined up each day. I would recommend this for any resident or visitor of Philadelphia.

“NOT WORTH IT”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

I have seen the 4th of July fireworks in NYC, GREAT!!! I have also seen them in small hometowns like Denville, NJ, Danbury, CT, Albany, NY which beat out the Philly ones handsdown. Philadelphia 2013 fireworks was by FAR the WORST. First of all, two different websites gave two different times 9pm and 10pm, when in reality they didn't start until 11pm and were done by 11:12. And we had a 3 yr old with us who was about "done" at that late hour. We took the Septa train in and saw them on the Schuylkill River Banks, which was nice in itself but just too long to wait for them to shoot them and too short once they got started. HUGE crowd, tons of people and then there was a mass exodus from the place immediately after they ended and the Septa trains were packed to capacity, people were standing in the aisles and it was difficult to get off the train at your stop, because you had to squeeze through all the people, it was actually a little scary.

“If you have time its nice, not a must see tho.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

When the water is filed with row teams so much nicer to see... renting a bike from here not really worth it ... crowds get in the way and you have to stick to the bike lane for safety!!! More time is spent watching traffic than enjoying a bike ride through city.
