“Mixed blessings and a wonderful night's sleep”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

The location is perfect, right by Rittenhouse Square, close to Logan Square, an easy walk to historic downtown. The hotel itself isn't prepossessing, the "art " on the hallways is ridiculous, but the bedrrom we had was large, comfortable, with the most luxurious beds I've slept in since my last stay at a Sofitel (in London's Heathrow Airport). Mattresses, pads, pillows - a feeling of sinking into clouds. The bathroom is again very spacious; the terry robes (one for each) are luxury itself.
However - the downstairs lounge/bar/restaurant is characterless and dismal, while the charming brasserie Chez Colette, for no fathonable reason, is used only for breakfast. And breakfast is pricey! At check-in you are told that there is "complimentary coffee" in the morning, and in a mean-spirited way, this is exactly what is "complimentary": a single cup of coffee (or hot water and tea bag). A croissant is $2. Breakfast is a fixed price, $20. or $22. depending on the day. In similar spirit, the small sample bottle of body lotion in the bathroom had to last the 3 days we were there.
Such miserliness has no place in what should be a luxury hotel. The clerk greets you with "Bonjour," though if you return the greeting in French, you are met with a stare. This hotel needs only a few tweaks here and there to become upscale - and I wish it would.

We have stayed here before. This time around was gross!! We went to our room to find food on the floor:( When we spoke to someone about it, we got the answer of "perfect" and he left. Nothing was done and we never heard from the guy again???
Also the furniture was beat up and should have been replaced years ago! Do not stay in room 634.

We (42 year old married couple) stayed in this hotel while attending the International Flower Show. The hotel is very nice. The outside staff/valet parking folks are wonderful, greet you every time and open the doors. The elevators have a keyed entry because there is a bar on the main floor when you walk in off to one side. We felt good about that security so random people couldn't wander upstairs. The room itself was very clean, nice sized bathroom with beautiful amenities. The bed was very comfortable and we slept like rock stars. One quirky thing, there aren't a lot of drawers to put clothes in but there is a large closet on one wall with shelves so you can definitely put your things away. There is an in-room safe. Bonus: turn down service. We came back, curtains were drawn, soft jazz playing, the bed turned down, the bathroom refreshed. Very nice. We got a package deal which included parking (usually about $34 per night) and included breakfast (meals in the restaurant were $18-$24-- they had a nice breakfast menu.) Juice and coffee were included. The first time we hit the restaurant on Saturday, they only had 2 servers and they stopped seating people because the seated people weren't even being served. A number of people got up and left. We grabbed a newspaper and hung out a bit. The restaurant cleared and we had a nice breakfast. Tip: I recommend asking for a late check out. The valets can only bring so many cars around because the parking area outside the hotel is very small. Nothing like being ready to go and having to wait on your car. There are no fridges in the room. The location is perfect for hitting lots of good restaurants and sites like Rittenhouse Square. We didn't have to take our car out at all and were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go.

Room Tip: We asked for a high floor to avoid noise from the bar.

We've stayed at Sofitel on several occasions throughout the years and each time the service by all staff was exceptional. This particular visit was above and beyond our expectations as we celebrated our 1 year anniversary. When we arrived, we learned that the hotel manager upgraded us to the Presidential Suite which was - in and of itself - well beyond what we expected. The entire staff kept wishing us a happy anniversary. We couldn't believe how warm and genuine they were. I was amazed they remembered given that the hotel was busy that particular weekend.

Staying at the Sofitel made our experience a time to remember and an event to treasure. We originally thought the Philadelphia Flower Show would be the highlight of the weekend. Instead, the experience of the Philadelphia Sofitel was.

On Sunday, the day we were checking out, I called the front desk and asked if it would be ok if we checked out one hour later. We wanted to sleep in and the clocks were set one hour forward due to Daylight Saving Time. The receptionist was so nice. She again wished us a happy 1 year anniversary and stated we could stay as long as we wanted to. Of course, we didn't take advantage of it, checking out around 12:30pm. It was so nice.

We love this hotel and will return. Thank you all to the entire staff.

I stayed here for just one night. Having stayed at a couple of Sofitels before (Sydney & Heathrow) I have to say that this is by far the best.
We were warmly welcomed, I think by Hector?
All the staff that we came into contact with we're incredibly polite, helpful and I have to say genuine.
Breakfast was delicious, and again the waiting staff couldn't have been more helpful.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone visiting Philly.

My significant other and I booked the Sofitel for a romantic get away for Valentine's. The room was lovely, large bed, simple but comfortable furniture that didn't overwhelm the room. The bathroom is amazing with a glass standing shower and a separate full size bath. Only complaints were that there was no separate top sheet on the bed so it was a little warm. Great location for restaurants and old city attractions (Independence Hall, Liberty bell, etc.) but would likely want to take a bus/taxi to the art museum, Franklin institute or Natural Science museum. Breakfast was excellent but expensive. I would definitely stay here again.

Bonjour,

Thank you for your comments. We are delighted that you choose us to spend your Valentines romantic get away with. We are very pleased that you enjoyed our rooms, unique So-Beds, large bathrooms, and great location. We understand that not all guests prefer to only have the European style duvet without a top sheet and appreciate your feedback as it enables us to improve our services to our guests. We are always able to provide a top sheet for guests upon request; however, we will review your comments to make improvements to our hotel that best suite our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back to Sofitel Philadelphia in the future.

This place is very convenient if you are visiting one of the downtown Philly highrises. I was at a conference there, and the food and conference amenities were all excellent. The staff all say 'Bonjour,' which is sort of cute, and even the maids were friendly. The waitress who promised to come back with a napkin when she spilled a bit of bar drink down my coat never did return. (it wasn't much of a spill, so not a big deal, and I didn't even go looking)

The beds are crazy comfortable. Wifi was great. My big issue was that I was on the top floor, and there was a loud rattling that seemed to materialize at about 5:15 a.m. and quit about 8. It sounded like jackhammering from nearby though upon further listening, it was more like rattling, like something on the roof was not secure; the noise didn't seem to come from the fan or anything in the room itself. I only reported this at checkout, because I really didn't want workmen in my room at 5 when the sound appeared. It was not a big deal on the other mornings because I just covered my head with one of the comfy pillows. So if you are staying there sometime soon, I would avoid rooms 1425-1427 or in that range unless they tell you the noise problem got solved.

Bonjour,

Thank you for your comments. We are delighted that you found us to be such a good business location and fine hotel. We are very pleased that you enjoyed our food, conference amenities, and friendly staff. However, we do apologize for your waitress not returning after the small spill on your coat and will most definitely discuss your review with our restaurant team to ensure that our service remains high. We are also perplexed about the noise that you heard from the top floor and will work with our engineering department to set everything strait. This is the first time we have encountered a report of this and will ensure that we will pursue it until it is fixed. We look forward for an opportunity to welcome you back to Sofitel Philadelphia in the future and to provide better service to what you have experienced with your last visit.
