“An unexpected gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

I stayed here one night on my way to NYC and it was a pleasant surprise. Pulling up curbside I was greeted by chestnuts and cider on the 'portch' and upon entering the lobby on a Saturday night the place was quite busy. The lobby is a beautiful space whose primary function is that of their bar operation and for a hotel bar the place was packed. Lots of fancy attire perhaps grabbing a drink before heading to a show/ballet; but it didn't bother me. Front desk is small and intimate and a few steps away the elevators whisk up to the rooms. For a city hotel they're are large and comfy in traditional green, yellow and rust...not very luxurious and the furniture is due for replacement. A small fridge on the floor was the minibar, a bit weird; but as I was here for just a night, didn't matter. The bathroom was nice sized...both a tub and separate shower, all in Ritz marble. Room service provided an excellent burger and fries, big and juicy and the view of the City Hall and main boulevard was nicer than expected. All in all a great stay with nice helpful staff.

I stay here each time I travel to Philadelphia. The staff consistently provides the excellent service that one would expect from a Ritz-Carlton property. The lobby is gorgeous; bar and restaurant are excellent. The rooms are spacious and comfortable; the only drawback is that you may have to deal with street noise depending on the floor on which your room is located. The location in Center City is ideal.

Recently spent a Thursday night in Philadelphia on business. While the warm reception upon entering the hotel was over the top, the room was less "special" than expected. My husband and I were fortunate enough to have borrowed Marriot points from my father for this stay. The hotel lobby and overall "feel" of the hotel were exceptional.

The room itself was not quite as roomy as we would have liked, but well appointed. The bathroom was lovely and the layout of the room was nice. The room smelled a bit musty and the beds were not as comfortable as other Marriot owned properties.

A side note.... I sometimes feel confused by "upgrades" at Marriot hotels. We are Marriot timeshare owners, spend a LOT of money on our Marriot Visa cards throughout the year and generally stay with Marriot, whether we are using points or paying out of pocket. One would think the better rooms would be reserved for those who are loyal to the Marriot brand, but each hotel seems to have their own "standards" when it comes to providing upgrades.

The woman at the front desk told us our room was an upgrade and so, I wonder how the standard room would be?

One other issue had to do with the room next door to ours. Our room was located behind a door that led to a small hallway. There was an additional entrance to a separate room, alongside our door. Every time the guests in the next room entered or left their room, the door slammed loudly. It was irritating, especially since there seemed to be a lot of activity in room next door.

Aside from these minor concerns, the room was good -- not the best Marriot stay we have had, but it was still pleasant. The staff at the hotel made us feel pampered, as if the Ritz were somewhere super special, but beyond that..... not worth the hefty price, and certainly not as "special" as we had hoped.

Being from the area I am not a huge fan of Philadelphia but this hotel feels like your on vacation, even if its just for a night. The lounge and bar area are superb and the restaurant is delicious. The staff and service was what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. This is easily the best hotel in Philly. Perfect for a romantic occasion!

The Ritz is an older hotel, but the rooms have been appropriately modernized, and the public areas are quite nice. Service is quite strong, and the location is a good one. The Ritz is near the top of my list for trips to Philadelphia.

This hotel has a lot of character in the lobby and the service team does a great job trying to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I stayed in room 605 and it was a nice room. It was a split room with the bedroom on one side, the bathroom in the middle and the sitting room on the other side. Overall there was lots of room. The bathroom has a huge picture window that opens up to other office buildings but there is a big electric shade that covers everything well. Look carefully for the switch to operate the shade, it is there. Other than a couple of inconveniences (the end on the Ethernet cable was broken and the iron steam function did not work at all) the say was very good. I was there for a large business meeting so we ate catered food from the kitchen on a regular basis and everything was very good. The staff that served the business meeting meals through catering were very very good.
I love the lobby and lobby bar of this place. Very classy.

Room Tip: Room 605 did not really have a great view. Try to get higher.

Despite other commentary to the contrary, I have always had wonderful experiences at the Ritz. The rooms vary in size with those facing city hall a bit narrow but absolutely worth it for the stunning view. Even our enormous bathtub looked out on the monument--their bath menu is such a treat, especially for kids. My son had the Benjamin Franklin with cookies and milk and enjoyed himself tremendously. I highly recommend the club level rooms. The food presentations in the private lounge are very creative and delicious. Service is fantastic. As an example, when the valet returned our car to us at departure, there were chilled water bottles in all of the cupholders and a box of amazing baked treats to sustain us on our journey home. Simply the best in Philly!
