“Lovely, friendly Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2011

Stayed here for 2 days in early July and the hotel was perfect. The staff was beyond friendly, let my friend store her bags before I arrived, called the shuttle for me when it was late, etc. The location was wonderful, short walk to the Historical part of town, Reading Terminal Market and the Convention Center. The room was comfortable, small but efficient. The bathroom was interesting, no tub or shower stall but things didn't get as wet as I'd expected. Only real complaint--the pillows sucked, bring your own! Otherwise, this was a wonderful welcoming place to stay.

Small hotel, only 1 elevator. But there's a fitness room, and free computer room, and free reasonably good wi-fi. The rooms are well-designed to make best use of the space, extremely clean and well-maintained. The staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful, with a few printed tourist and restaurant recommendations as well. Free breakfast is well-provisioned.

There were 10 of us, 5 couples "of a certain age" gathering for a three-day reunion. We were in a king-sized room, with good a/c and a very comfortable bed (the pillows not so comfortable though). Every person on the staff was friendly, pleasant, and helpful. Even before we arrived when we called with Qs about places to eat in the vicinity, we got good, helpful, detailed information. The neighborhood is delightful to walk around, many outdoor cafe's to try, lots of small, charming buildings and only a few blocks to Market St. if you want to pick up the Flash (free for seniors) or other buses. Good garage just a couple of blocks away (pay at the Inn and get a good discount).
We'll be back, Alexander Inn.

Best things:
(1) location - I love to be able to walk, and this was a great location for that. All the historic sites are about a 15 minute walk away. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. And the best gelato (Capogiro) is only a five minute walk.
(2) friendly staff: after we checked out, we left our bags at the front desk so we could spend the day sightseeing. At the end of the day, we returned to the Inn where they called us a cab and we were on our way. Painless!
(3) free breakfast - nothing fancy, but it is a nice and easy way to start the morning when the basics are just an elevator ride away
(4) room was a good size - we didn't spend much time in the room, but when we did, we didn't feel cramped
(5) free in-room Internet plus free computers in the basement in case you don't have one

Needs improvement (but not deal breakers):
(1) The exercise room was nice to have, but if you like modern cardio machines you will be disappointed. The bike and treadmill must have been purchased in the 80s. There was a nice variety of dumbbells, though, if you are into weight training.
(2) The air conditioner was pretty noisy. I always pack my earplugs, but I think the noise would have really bothered me without them.
(3) The window shades did not block the sun in the morning. I always pack my sleepmask, so not a problem for me, but it may be for some.

We will definitely be back on our next trip to Philly!

This small boutique hotel was perfect for my first visit to Philadelphia.
Walking distance to all of the historical sights and shops.
Great Latin restaurant right around the corner called Misto-try the Sangria!
Taxi's are plentiful but walking is super fun. The hotel was clean, great continental
breakfast served in the morning-a very good value for staying in Philly.
Will be back when the weather is a bit cooler!

What can I say that that other reviewers haven’t said? As there were 400 others I assume it is a popular hotel. But here is my 2 cents.

When we travel to a city we prefer not to stay in a large downtown hotel. We typically try and locate a hotel on the edge of the city and walk or take public transportation everywhere if possible. That’s how we found the “Alexander”. The location for us was perfect. It is located a short walk to the Visitors Center, South Street and many attractions and you can jump on the Tour Bus or SEPTA public transportation a few blocks away. It’s on a quiet, mostly residential street. We had a double-double room on the second floor overlooking Cedar Street with a nice sidewalk wine and cheese café across the street. The room was very large with two platform double beds with very comfortable mattresses and pillows. The room had a bay window with three large windows with wood blinds. The room is tastefully decorated in period colors had a large dresser, flat screen TV, refrigerator and safe. The bath was modern but small. My only complaint was that the air conditioner was a little noisy. Other than that, it was perfect and would also recommend getting the large room.

The free buffet breakfast was very nice with fruit, cereal, breads, Danish and great coffee.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking was not at the hotel but at a parking garage a few blocks away. The hotel provided a discounted rate.

We were very happy with our choice of the hotel and its location and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Unload your car across from hotel on 12th street
