“Good location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for 2 nights in November. The staff were very helpful and the hotel was very clean.
There was a range of options available for breakfast and helpful staff on hand to provide assistance.
The hotel itself is in a very good location. We arrived by bus and we're able to walk to the hotel. We managed to walk to most sites and actually only used the subway to get to the Wells Fargo centre as this is too far to walk to.

This hotel is in an ideal location for the history of Philadelphia. There are many restaurants and bars in the area as well. We were walking distance to everything. And if you wanted to go else where the Septa was a block away. Everyone at hotel was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. Walls are a little thin. The first night we were kept up by our neighbors noise. My husband used the hot tub everyday and enjoyed that. The breakfast was a good hot breakfast of boiled eggs, waffles, breads, cereal, and fruit.

We stayed here for 3 nights (room 209, Q w/fireplace) in late December. The continental breakfast was really good except the only protein available was boiled eggs. It was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. My only complaints are, the shower was VERY NOISY (rattling pipes) and the comforter was stained.
The location is perfect if you like walking around, shopping, eating and drinking. There's a bus stop and subway right next door also. The Italian restaurant next door was really good and apparently has an excellent wine list (I'm not a wine person). It's a little dated but I'd stay here again.

Had to be in Philly for business in January. I don't usually stay at local places given the uncertainty of the quality, but this place was pretty good. Very friendly staff, nice accommodations and a bit quirky. Nice location for central Philly, fairly decent continental breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised and would stay here again when in Philly.

We stayed in this hotel in Feb 2013 on a mini vacation to see Philly. The hotel was kind of hard to find on our GPS and parking isn't ideal (there isn't any provided by the hotel and you have to pay for street parking).

However, the hotel is centrally located to all of the historical sites and close to LOTS of dinning and bars.

The room was adorably decorated (but def dated-it reminded us of grandma's house). Our room faced the street and unfortunately just a bright light shinning in our room all night. The room didn't have normal curtains-just sheer ones so it didn't block any of the light (which if you like to sleep in darkness forget about it). This may not be the case or all of the rooms though.

Breakfast was good, but we can't say the same for dinner. The bartender was extremely snobby/rude to us. We aren't big wine drinkers, but wanted to come down to eat a nice dinner before heading out to go sight seeing. She seemed more than annoyed that we didn't want wine and the rest of the service was poor. We can appreciate that they have a TON of wines on tap and did find it interesting, but wouldn't even recommend it to our wine friends due to the poor service.

The staff was very friendly. The standard room was small, the bed was very mushy. I wish they made some Real coffee for breakfast. We went to old city coffee instead. The location is one of my favorites in Philly. Great architecture and history.

Thank you for your feedback. We are in the process - as the winter is approaching - renovating our standard rooms. We are changing the beds, and all of the textiles in the rooms. 2014 will be a fresh start for the Penn's View Hotel.

The coffee is actually OCB - Old City Blend from Old City Coffee. The grind level of our grinder may be and will be corrected immediately. We value the feedback and want to strive to make your stay here memorable.

It's a revived structure (Historic Preservation Designated) and so I'm skeptical of such buildings.

Upon arrival I look for dirt or lack of maintenance, this place was beautiful and clean and well maintained. In an old building like this I look for entrance ways for vermin like plumbing fixtures, etc., this place was sealed tight and it looked to me like every effort was made to make this a safe, hygienic environment free from vermin of any type.

The room was authentically decorated. The breakfast facilities and food itself were excellent. The decor and music (traditional holiday) was wonderful.

I would make a few suggestions for improvement. First in our room (413) I would move the toilet paper roll-bar somewhere else. It's right next to the toilet (perhaps 4") in a tight squeeze and even a very skinny person will have a difficult time getting to it.

Second, there should be either comp bottled water (just purified; nothing fancy) or a vending machine where you can buy bottled water. When I inquired at the front desk I was referred to the restaurant/lounge. The restaurant/lounge only sold 2 litre sized bubbly water. All I wanted was a $2. bottle of purified water.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again and recommend it to anyone wanting a Philadelphia experience. I'd just bring my own water.

Suggestions are always welcome. We will look into the issues raised. Being a historic property - space for a soda machine is extremely difficult to place. We are in the process to move some plumbing and electrical needs in order to get a more modern vending machine in place at our hotel.

Thank you for the feedback and hope to see you soon.
