Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

“Must see in Philly!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

Forget the Halloween set-up, go on a cloudy, dreary day and walk down the halls. It is truly scary. So much history in those walls. Snap some pictures without a flash and maybe youll get an orb. I was lucky to capture something down one of the halls. It can happen. It's off the beaten path of the city but worth checking out if you're visiting or if you live in the area.

“Scream factory during Halloween”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

While I have not visited during normal daylight hours, I hear that the prison is eerie even when you can see the sun. This experience, however, was beyond eerie. The actors were really great and the props did an amazing job of scaring me. Please note that I am not a "scary movie person" so it doesn't take much. This was worth the fun time for the season though. Go with friends or even with family - wear the glowstick!

“Amazing history, amazing place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

There's no place like this one to experience hands on the history of the american penitentiary system since the 1800's.

This historic landmark completely changes your perspective on the judicial system of those times. The site echoes with life and stories, even in it's semi ruined state, i guess that's what gives it it's power.

Aside from the audio tour, please take the hands on history tour, you'll see places and real stories that truly make your visit amazing and unforgettable.

If you get hungry after all that walking, be sure to eat at Jack's Firehouse across the street, you'll love it.

“Feel it. Learn from it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

Visit it if you're interested in learning the history of a prison. It is not creepy at all and pretty educational. Learn bout some crazy history of this prison and I would say it is a cool experience. Or else, get a tour guide for your visit and it is FREE! They know the prison very well!
However, not recommended for kids tho.

“Interesting but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

The constrcuction is very interesting for people that have visited a prision. The site is cold and everuthing is well organized (although my headphone was out of order).
Nevertheless, there is not much to be seen - cells and history about the place - name of famous and not famous inmates.
If you do not have high expectatios, you should pay a visit.
