“Perfect Location, a lot to be desired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2011

We chose this hotel specifically because of it's location, and was glad it was a Sheraton, given my Starpoints preference. It was not up to the standards that I have come to expect. First, someone else commented on the friendliness (or lack thereof) of the staff. I am used to being greeted on coming and going....there was none of that. When I checked out, no "how was your stay..."you get the picture.

$30 for a rollaway bed in the room was the most I have ever paid, and should be 1/3 to 1/2 of that per my experience.

Lastly, we returned at about 4 PM after being out all day, and our room was not cleaned. An inquiry revealed that they unapologetically have a policy that they have until 6 PM to get to all of the rooms. My suggestion that this might not be the most convenient for guests who like to come back before dinner was listened to politely.....

Would not be back if not for the location.

This hotel was awful. When we first arrived, we had to navigate through the smokers hanging right outside the front door. Not a great introducation. We walked into the hotel four times during our stay. Each time, there were smokers right out front. The hotel lobby was crowded and there seemed to be groups of people getting in and out on various floors making the elevator service slow.

The first thing we did was eat in the hotel restaurant. It was fair, at best.

Our room looked ok on the surface. However, we quickly noticed food from the last guest in the mini-fridge, and blueberries under the coffee table. It did not appear that the room had been properly cleaned and vacuumed. We came to also see that the sheet on the bed did not fit. So, the bottom (about a foot) of the mattress exposed! The toiletries the hotel had in the bathroom (like a pack of toothpaste) were dusty, like some of them had been there for quite some time.

The bed was ok. The sofa bed was uncomfortable-like sleeping on springs. I was so turned off by the hygiene at this hotel that we skipped free hor d'oevres and breakfast on the Club floor. I could not wait to get out of there and was glad our stay was only for one night.

We wanted to stay on the Penn campus. Next time, I'll stay further away. I would rather travel a couple miles from a decent hotel, rather than a couple blocks from this place.

Dear Lynn026,

We want to extend a heartfelt apology for the experience you had. Due to a large group we had in-house over your stay there were an unusual amount of smokers. Our hotel is 100% non-smoking and it is unfortunate that you had to encounter the smoke on many occasions while entering or departing the hotel. We also apologize that our cleaning services were not satisfactory. What you experienced is not indicative of our typical cleaning procedures-- and we will be sure to address this with housekeeping because it is unacceptable. Thank you for bringing these items to our attention. Safe travels!

I stay here each time I'm in Philadelphia for business. They have a $10 shuttle to/from the airport and parking is $10 a day. My room has always been clean and the bed is always fluffy and great. The hotel staff is great. Room service is timely. However, this is not a great location for tourist-y things as you must walk a bit or taxi. This is a UPenn area, so each time I've been there the street in front of the hotel is very noisy, I'm assuming from young adults partying too much.

Room Tip: Not on side facing the street in front of hotle

TXPhD11,

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review and we are so glad to see that you are utilizing our Lady Liberty Shuttle for $10. Here at the Sheraton University City Hotel we take great pride in the cleanliness of our rooms and our comfortable Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Beds. Although we are not walking distance to the downtown tourist attractions, we hope you were able to utilize the subway to get there (located 2 blocks from out hotel on 34th and Market Street). Please do come back and visit us again soon. Safe Travels!

Cold welcome at Reception. No smile. No offer of assistance with baggage or directions to room (which was on the Starwood Preferred Guests Floor ).
The first day I had tea but the second day there was tea but no sugar or stirrer !
A liitle care to detail would have ensured that there was extra tea and sugar everyday as the coffee was untouched.
The bathroom door didn't shut easily and the clothes hook on the back was missing. Just little things that would've made a difference.

I was in Philly for work for 3 nights. The location of the hotel was perfectly situated for my work at Drexel University. It was reasonably priced, and the new Sangkee noodle house that is in the hotel was a very nice amenity (food was GREAT and inexpensive).
The hotel has been recently remodeled, and the bed was very comfortable and the TV was nice. However, the old heating unit, linked to the wall thermostat, was not working well. They sent someone up to fix it, but then throughout the night, it would continue to click on and off every 5 minutes which was awful. The bathroom was nice but VERY small. Also, the rooms don't have a minibar, and the hotel's vending options are scarce. The hotel's lobby area is very spacious with fireplaces and was comfortable.
So, if you get a decent price, not a bad place to stay. Just don't expect great amenities.

browna1234,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our property. We are glad that you are pleased with the convenience of our location and our new restaurant, Sang Kee Noodle House. Recently we have undergone a 5 million dollar renovation (including the lobby). Unfortunately, our heating units were not part of those renovations. We hope that by the next time you visit we will have had the chance to address the units. Thank you choosing the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel and we do hope that you visit us again soon. Safe travels!

Warm Regards,

Management.

We stayed at this property on the last weekend of February. We arrived later on at night at almost 8. When we arrived we came into the nice looking parking garage. We came into a very nice lobby. It looked like it was recently redone. We are platinum preffered guests inthe spg program so we got upgraded to one of their suites. The room was great, but the carpet and furniture was getting a little worn out. The lady at the club lounge was top notch!!!!!!! She was very nice. Our stay was pretty nice and would reccommmend this hotel.

greattimes52370,

We cannot tell you how much we appreciate your review. We take what our guests have to say to heart and always try to make improvements where they are needed. It seems as though you were able to experience some of our most recent renovations (the lobby) and you were upgraded because you are an SPG member. Thanks for being a preferred member and remaining a loyal guest. We do hope to see you again soon.

Safe travels!
