“In all honesty, worthy of more than 3 stars...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2006

This is a great hotel. Went for a one night stay with my husband on 4/28-4/29 and could not have been happier. Skipped the valet parking at $35/day and parked one block away across Market Street in a garage off of 12th street for $13. Lobby is really nice, check-in was completely efficient. Given a GREAT room - #1739 and we were completely shocked (in a good way) when we opened the (double!) doors to the room - it was a huge suite complete with a living room with couch, coffee table, entertainment center, end tables and 2 chairs, 6 person dining (!!!) room with buffet, wet bar with mini fridge, complimentary bottled water, coffee and tea, 2 huge closets with terrycloth robes, 2 huge double windows overlooking the city, nice (although somewhat smallish, given the size of the hotel room) bathroom with great amentities (mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower gel, shower cap, mending kit, shoe polish cloth, q-tips and cotton balls) and one queen sized (VERY VERY comfortable) bed. Shower was very powerful and there was a great heat lamp in the bathroom, almost felt like you had your own sauna in there! This room was huge; I've lived in apartments that were smaller than this. And, the clincher...I had won this room on Priceline for $75 when the going rate for a standard room for the night was $269! Wow. I could not beat this deal if I had tried and could not believe they had upgraded me to such a great room. Als, room was very clean and quiet.

Lobby has a Starbucks, a bunch of restaurants (Champions Sports Bar, a hotel restaurants, a JW Steakhouse) and some shops. It does seem very business-oriented. Really nice bar in the lobby as well. We checked out the indoor pool and fitness facility - the fitness center was very good, the pool was just OK. Pool was very small for such a large hotel (I think they have about 1400 rooms here.) 2 lanes for lap swimming and a smallish area for entering the pool. Not great for kids/families. They have a whirlpool next to the pool and dry saunas in each of the respective mens/womens locker rooms. It does seem to be very well maintained.

Hotel location is fantastic. It is attached to the Convention Center and right in the heart of Center City Philly. Loads of restaurant choices within the space of a few blocks. We ate dinner at El Vez just a few blocks away at 13th and Walnut. Excellent Mexican food (love the homemade guacamole and the taco sampler platter) and the very potent pomegranate margaritas. In the morning, we skipped breakfast at the hotel restaurant and walked a block away to the Reading Terminal Market. Just great.

Every single staff member who I came into contact with smiled and said hello. Elevators were very fast, didn't wait for more than a few seconds. Room service menu was reasonably priced for that particular service (didn't seem to cost any more than the restaurant prices, which is nice.) I think this hotel is closer to a 3.5-4 star hotel than just a 3 star in all honesty. I do like the Hilton Garden Inn (also next to the Convention Center) and have stayed there as well, but this place has them beat hands down and I think the Hilton is worthy of its 3 star rating. The Marriott is a notch higher. I'd definitely stay again and hopefully will win it again on Priceline, where it apparently comes up quite frequently. An absolute steal for $75.

The beds are probably the most comfy of any I have slept. We've stayed here for one night on two seperate occasions while traveling through Philly and have had a wonderful nights sleep each time. The rooms are a little snug and the hotel over alls seems a little aged, but the location is great for a few days in Philiadelphia. You are a short walk from the historic district and the harbor in one direction and the two main museums in the other.

Stayed recently on business. The facilities and the staff are both top notch for this area. My room was clean and everything in it worked as intended. I have no complaints.

The staff are a great example of Marriott customer service at its best. I stayed for four nights, on business. The staff were wonderful at every turn, and corrected a cleaning problem with quick, efficient attention to detail and a credit toward restaurant or room service. The next day, I received a call checking to see if my room cleaning was being done as it should be. The room was a corner on the 12th floor; great views, very comfortable and spacious, very quiet. I had long working hours and was grateful for the comfort and peace of my room. Room service was excellent. Proximity to Convention Center, Reading Terminal Market, etc. are all pluses. Would definitely stay here again.

Obtained reservation for a Sunday night at Marriott Downtown via Priceline at the incredible rate of only $59.75 total including taxes and service fees. Excellent location right in the middle of Philly, convenient walk to most everything in Center City. Be sure to direct your cabbie to correct entrance behind 12th and Market (rear alley) as there is another Marriott (the Courtyard) just around the corner facing City Hall. Inquire about parking fees before making a reservation - the posted charges appeared to be expensive ($30). Doorman not the least bit snooty to a very casually (jeans/sweatshirt) dressed arrival. Spacious, palatial lobby with a couple of boutique type shops as well as Starbucks, a lobby bar, and several restaurants. Front desk staff was exceptionally friendly, polite, efficient, and accomodated a request for a quiet room away from the elevators and ice machine. Reasonably fast elevator service. Housekeeper on the floor greeted a guest and pointed the way to the room, a long walk from the elevator (this is a big hotel). Sizeable, comfy room and large, well lit bathroom. Furnishings and amenities at near four star caliber; only drawback noted was lack of mini-fridge and microwave. Especially appreciated was a firm foam topped bed and whisper quiet heating system with electronic thermostat. Plenty of hot water, even at peak usage times. View from a ninth floor room provided only a drab view of a parking lot but both outside and hallway noise were well muffled. We took one meal at the Champions restaurant off the lobby – good service but noisy atmosphere (sports bar), with standard pub fare, greasy and no great bargain. However, dining alternatives abound at all price levels in this part of town. Summary: the Marriott Downtown occupies top spot, a slight edge over the Hilton Garden Inn as the best of the Priceline three star hotels in Philadelphia.

A group of us stayed for one night in order to attend the opening of the Flower Show the next morning. We had reserved three rooms through the Marriott reservations website. We arrived about 5PM on a Saturday and although there were a lot of people arriving by car at the same time the process went fairly quickly. We had decided to have the vehicle valet parked ($35) and we were out and in the lobby within a few moments.

Check in was fast and easy. I am a Marriott Rewards member but that did not speed the check-in process which did not need speeding up!

Room was the usual Marriott sort and quite adequate. We were not in the so-called "Deluxe Tower."

What I personally did not like was the bedding. The king size bed mattress had some sort of overlay padded cover to make it softer. It did the job but I personally prefer a much firmer mattress. Other members of the group who were in the other two rooms felt their beds were fine.

Breakfast buffet was adequate; omelets and Belgian waffles made-to-order are available.

Staff were routinely helpful and friendly throughout every section of the hotel. The connecting walkway to the Convention Center next door was appreciated.

The hotel is convenient to local public transport and most areas of Center City.
