“Average room, but great location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

Stayed here 5/13/12- 5/18/12. My husband was here for work and I came along to see the sites. Taxi from airport was $28, and less than 30 minutes. Arrived at 2:30 pm, check in begins at 4pm. Were able to pre-register and then were called on cell phone when room was ready at about 3:15 pm. Stayed in room 820 king bed room. Room was on the small side, but had a great view of City Hall. Plenty of pillows on bed, but most were flat. Lots of light and art was of the city sites. There also also lots of travel brochures in room with plenty of site seeing info. Good size closet, and plenty of drawer space, and lots of outlets, and no crawling on the floor to find them. Bathroom was standard, but did not seem to have a vent so became very fogged up when showering, and low water pressure. If you need to do laundry coin operated washer/dryer are availiable on one of the floors. The keys just need to be placed near lock to open and need key to operate elevator, but can go to any floor you want once key activates elevator. For some reason housekeeping would take away the old toiletries when placing new, what a waste as I was willing to use the old ones until empty. One of the reasons I am only giving 3 stars is after checking in I like to read the hotel info book in the room, and was excited to hear there was a spa and hair salon in hotel. This info was incorrect, no spa/salon, also the restaurant info was outdated as well. Listing names of restaurants that are no longer there. Would be nice if this info was updated. There is a Starbucks in lobby with long lines in am, a restuarant called 13, only had breakfast there that was average, and a place called Circ. Circ is acutally open for dinner only and is in the lobby lounge, and has a very small menu. On the plus side hotel is within walking distance to many of the sites: Libery Bell, Independance Hall, Constitution Center, Betsy Ross house, City Hall tour, and Love park among others. Also connected to subway and shopping mall with lots of food choices. Would stay here again if work was paying for, but the charge of $259 we had to pay for Sunday night was too much.

I stayed here recently for a trade show and for the most part was very pleased.

Pros:
1. Excellent location for the convention center. You can get there without going outside since the Marriott is connected via the second floor of Reading Terminal Market. This made the location perfect for getting to and from the show without having to worry about weather or traffic and crowds of people outside.
2. The rooms were well appointed and if you are lucky, some of the views are pretty nice.
3. The staff was typical Marriott, very courteous and helpful. The housekeeping staff did a stellar job.
4. The lobby has a nice lounge area and useful shops. There is a gift shop in case you need to buy a local item for family members but do not have time to go anywhere, a Starbucks and a FedEx Kinkos. Even though I did not go to them, there are restaurants too, but Reading Terminal Market is across the street.
5. If you were having a meeting at the Marriott, the number of conference rooms is amazing, in all shapes and sizes.
6. The room keys are RFID so you could just hold up your wallet to your door and it will open.
7. Security personal are abundant. Also, there is an easy to use safe in the room if you need it.

Neutral:
1. The elevators required a room key to get to a specific floor. This is great for security, but not good if you want to visit someone on another floor. If you are staying with family, and they are on another floor, make sure you get another key get access to their floors.
2. There is a small lap pool with splash area for kids, but no hot tub, which I was really wanting after working the trade show. I am surprised there was no hot tub in a hotel like this, but not enough to warrant a con.
3. The closet space was fine for me, but may be small for others, especially if staying for more than a few nights.

Cons:
1. No Free Wifi! This continues to irk me. Wifi should be free for hotel guests; we are spending enough money on the room that this service should be included, like in the much less expensive Hamptons and Holiday Inns. I understand that Marriott has you trapped, especially if your conference is in the hotel, but seriously, $14 a day for wifi? Are you kidding? Luckily, I have Sprint so I just had to turn on my 4G Wifi Hotspot (Android phones have this) which costs $0.67 a day and I was able to work around the issue. But this continues to annoy me at these premium hotels. The more you pay the less you get.
2. Parking cost $45.60 per night for guests! I completely understand that cost for non-guests considering it is downtown Philly, but I think that is a bit outrageous for guests. I am not expecting free parking, but maybe some sort of discount would be nice.

If I was in the area again for a convention, I would definitely consider staying here again.

This is a very nice property. I stayed in the Headhouse Tower which is extremely close to the convention center. The room was very spacious. The comfortable bed had amazingly soft sheets. I was really impressed with the staff...each and every one was friendly, helpful and very engaged in their jobs. I had room service several times and the food was quick and delicious. There was the standard 20 percent gratuity, but there was not an additional delivery charge like so many hotels charge. I wish the internet was free for Marriott Rewards members, but otherwise it was a great stay!

Room: I found the room to be very good, with a very comortable bed and ample space. I had a corner King bed room with a fairly large window; I'm not sure how other rooms in the property differ. The bathroom was spacious and of a slightly above average quality. Having to pay for internet access is always annoying (and I say this as I am using the free in-room internet in a hotel near Tokyo station that I paid nearly 1/3rd as much for as the Marriott), but that is par for the course in US hotels (and would've been covered if I had any status with Marriott). I think the room was a good value considering other rates I saw at the same time.

Location: I was in town for a show at the convention center, which was just a few blocks away; you could actually walk to the convertion center completely indoors, a nice benefit given that it was raining a bit throughout. There were a number of restaurants no more than a 5 minute walk from the hotel. I believe the hotel was also a short walk to Chinatown and the Liberty Bell, though I did not have a chance to check those out. Some of the areas directly outside the hotel are a bit...interesting. I never got the impression that I should be concerned about my safety, though I believe others could get that impression, especially after dark.

Service: Only interacted with the front desk staff to check in and out, so I can't say much about them. The housekeeping staff was very friendly and attentive.

If you stay, choose a room in the HeadHouse tower. This adaptive reuse of a classic old railroad building really works well. Built in 1893, and listed in the National Register of Historic places, this structure was renovated by Marriott with considerable financial assistance from the city and under pressure to maintain it's many unique features, including large windows and 16 foot wide hallways. The rooms have high ceilings, quirky layouts and lots of extra space. Its' a short walk through an inside bridge from the main Marriott, and you get a nice feeling as you walk through the renovated station area, now a part of the convention center. It's not like staying in a sterile box at all, and the standard of service is all Marriott.

Room Tip: Headhouse tower, ask for largest room available.

I stayed in a standard king room at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown for four nights in the main building as a family of four ... two adults and two small children. We chose to stay at the Marriott simply because I had a good group rate for an event that I was attending.

The biggest benefit of this hotel is the location ... it's walkable to key tourist sights such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, and also has great access to the subway lines as well as tourist transportation. For example the "Phlash" tourist bus leaves from right in front of the hotel. It is also right across the street from the Reading Terminal Market, which is a large food market ... kind of like an indoor permanent farmer's market.

The lobby/common area of the Marriott is quite spacious, modern, and clean. Lots of space for the front desk, a big central rotunda with a nice looking bar, and flat screens to direct people around the hotel. Unfortunately, the spacious and modern feeling ends at the lobby. The room that I was in was quite ordinary, uninspired, and on the small side. On a positive note, the furnishings were all well maintained, and made good use of the available space. There was also an AV center that let me plug in my iPad to watch movies on the flat screen TV (assuming you brought the right cables!). On the downside, the bathroom was on the small side and unfortunately the pipes were quite noisy ... you could hear the neighboring rooms use the shower or the faucet. There's also very little closet space.

In terms of service, I was very pleased, and the Marriott exceeded my expectations. The staff from the front desk, the concierge, and the main restaurant were all super-friendly and really made an effort to connect with us.

Finally, because I travel with kids, the pool is a critical component of a hotel. The Marriott has a decent indoor pool on the seventh floor. The pool is in the shape of a "T" with a lap pool, and an attached wading / splash area. It's a good design that lets the business people get their workout, while giving other people (kids) space to play around. The only complaint I have is that the water was quite cold, and there's no jacuzzi to warm up.

So in summary, I would come back to the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown for the right price because of the location. It's a competent but ordinary hotel that probably best services its primary clientele of business and convention travelers.

The staff could not have been more courteous or helpful. From the time we arrived to the time we left, someone on staff was always asking if we needed any help or directions.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a fantastic view of Philly
