My friend & I stayed here for a conference. Upon arrival, the taxi helped us unload our bags and said a bellman would be over shortly. We tried to get someone's attention, but no bell staff would come over. Finally, to the taxi driver's shock, my friend went over and grabbed a luggage cart herself and wheeled it over, and we loaded the bags on. We wheeled the cart into the hotel, and only as we reached the DOOR, did a bellman come to "help" us. Then he left the cart in the middle of the lobby while we checked in. I went to get the cart--didn't want it in the middle of the lobby--and brought it over to the front desk. Another bellman came over to tell us that carts were not allowed in the check in area, and dragged it back out to the middle of nowhere.
When we checked in, we again tried to get a bellman's attention to help us to the room. Nothing. So we wheeled it ourselves toward the elevators. Lo and behold--manager Tim Haggerty steps out of the elevator, sees us, and quickly offers his services. He was over-and-beyond helpful, which was a good save for the hotel!
The other service issue was with the concierge. I wanted to take a long run, so Ivan pointed to a specific door, said, "Go out these doors, take a left on Filbert, then a left on 20th, and about a mile and a half down you will find Ben Franklin." He even wrote these instructions down. Well, I did as he told me. But turning left on 20th took me down to the ghetto! I finally stopped and asked four women sitting on some steps (cutting each other's hair with a knife!!) how to get to Ben Franklin, and they were nice enough to point me the other way. Once I found the right way, the run was fabulous.
Another night I wanted to go to the Monk's Cafe. The valets told me to go 2 blocks this way, then 3 blocks left. Turns out it was about 10 blocks left! I thought, "What is it with people here and giving directions?"
The hotel itself is nice , the rooms are spacious, and the toiletries are great. The bathroom has a HUGE counter, perfect for two women to spread out on. The beds are incredibly comfortable; some nights we were so tired upon coming home that we would just pass out on top of the covers, and instantly be fast asleep.
It's fairly convenient to the sights and shopping, a little bit of a walk if you like that. My friends enjoyed the lobby bar very much. I went to the Reading Terminal Market every day; that was one of my favorite things!
If they can fix the service & knowledge issues, they'll be fine.
