“Great location - Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2010

I will quickly duplicate everything that has been said in other reviews. The hotel is centrally located, staff is helpful and the rooms are clean and quiet.

One negative that was mentioned in reviews is the slow internet. They offer free wireless and wired internet along with a higher speed paid service. I just plugged in and used the free wired connection and it was fine. I uploaded google maps and lots of other things on my old lap top that I travel with. I did not see in reviews of speed complaints whether the reviewer used free wireless or the free wired connection, maybe wireless is slower. I never tried to see.

I also have to mention breakfast at the Dutch Eating Place at Reading Terminal Market. It is really good and inexpensive. They just have counter service, no tables. I even saw couples sharing an order of pancakes because the portions are so large. The hotel faces Juniper, but there is a back entrance at 13th and Filbert. If you go out the back the market as well as Market East train station are only one block away.

The $45 nightly valet parking makes this hotel perhaps not the best option if you have a car. If you are relying on public transport you could not ask for a better location. I used city buses instead of the Phlash because the service is so quick in this central area wher several bus lines run up and down Market.

I had an early flight home, so I appreciated the free printing of my boarding pass at the business center in the lobby, next to the elevators.

I have attached a picture looking east at the front of the hotel. City Hall would be to the right and the building in the foreground on the left is the Masonic Temple. To the side of the hotel is Filbert Street and the Reading Terminal Market and Market East train station at the far end of the block.

We utilized our Marriott points to stay at this hotel and found the service lacking continuity. The front desk was helpful, the folks at the resturant were nice and the food was very good...what bothered me the most was we were expecting a very important package which was shipped Fedex and clearly signed for and recieved with a name on a specific date. When we inquired about the package we were told it wasn't recieved. We requested the tracking number from the shipper and retracked the package the following day. Needless to say the package was delivered the previous day but someone in loss prevention apparently was too lazy to look. We readdressed this issue when were told the package was not delivered the previous day but was delivered later....a clear falsehood. Then the person on the phone in loss prevention had a clear attitude. If you make a mistake admitted it and move on but don't lie about the issue...poor poor service from the loss prevention group!!!!!

The pool was dirty, the maid service never left soap in the room and left trash on our floor. The people had an attitude...not what I would expect from a Marriott and we have stayed at Marriotts throughout the world.

This facility has a great location. It was built in 1926. Be sure to ask for a room that has a city hall view. We initially had a Reading terminal view, but got moved to the city hall side and it was much better. Hotel is well appointed, has a nice 42" flat panel TV with many HD channels. Superb beds. First rate front desk staff. There is a snack bar with candy, drinks (soft and beer), adjacent to front desk. You are allowed one item from it per room per check-in. The orange subway line (north-south), is about 2 blocks to the west, an easy walk with little vehicular traffic. The blue line (east-west), is behind the hotel about a block away. At most you may have to cross a small alley/street to get there. It is a short 10 minute ride to the Historical Park. On the Orange line you can get to the sports stadiums in about 15-20 minutes. The Reading Terminal/market is one block east. Don't miss it. Great food. This area is stop #5 on the double-decker tour buses. There is a reasonably priced Seven-Eleven store on the way. Also on this block is a nice Chili's restaurant and don't miss Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant, with its tennis ball sized meatballs. The waitress there said it was patterned after the famous Carmine's restaurant in NYC. The main Marriott hotel is also located in this area. Don't miss the huge lobby and shops there. Also to the left as you exit the front door of the Courtyard is the Residence Inn. We did not eat at the restaurant in the Courtyard. The first floor even has a library at the rear of the building. We travel to Washington, New York City, and Baltimore quite a bit. We think Philadelphia has the nicest people of the four cities! We can't wait to come back and stay at the Courtyard downtown soon! Give this property serious consideration if you are novice (us) to Philadelphia or a seasoned traveler. Also there is a Macy's store about a block south of the property.

We had a really enjoyable weekend in Philadelphia.

Location: This hotel is across of street from the City Hall, next to the Residence Inn. It was a block from the Reading Terminal Market. We were able to walk to the Independnece Hall, Betty Ross's house, Penn's Landing, then walked to South Street in one day. Then walked to JFK Plaza, Comcast Experience, We also walked to the Academy of Natural Science and Franklin Institute. This location is great.

Parking: It was easy enough to pull our car right in front of the hotel when we arrived. We gave our car key to the valet. He filled out a ticket for the car, gave us the stub and told us to call them on the extension about 20 minutes before we want to use our car. The valet parking was $36 + tax. It came out to be about $46 per night with in and out previledge. There are many parking garages near by but it was hard to figure out how the parking fee will be calculated over night, so we decided to use the valet parking. We did not use our car while we stayed there. When we were ready to check out, we call the valet and got our car in about 25 minutes. The guy who helped us was super nice. He backed our car out onto the street and gave us detail direction on how to get onto I-95.

Check in/out: We arrived around 10 AM on a Saturday. The room was ready for us. We stayed on the 9th floor, far away from the elevators and the ice machine. Check out was really simple. We received our bill (under the door). We went to the counter, told the front desk our room number and check out was done.

Room: The room looked new and was very clean. The decor was simple and elegant, sort of modern traditional. The bed/sheets/pillows were really comfortable. The large flat screen TV and the fridge were nice and convenient. There were only about 5 high def channels, but we did not go to Philadelphia to watch TV, so it was ok. The internet connection worked fine for me. One thing I liked about the room was that the bathroom was completely blocked from the bed. One could use the bathroom and not disturb the other person sleeping. The water pressure and the water temperature was good. The room was pretty quiet.

Extra features/note: 1) In the hotel lobby, there was "strawberry" water. It's the ice cold water with fresh strawberry floating in the water. In the hot summer day, it was a really nice touch.. 2) The elevator will operate only after the key card has been inserted. I thought that was a great security feature.

I knew this was going to be a great hotel from the ease of checking as well as the friendly staff. This hotel was very clean and everyhing seemed fairly new. They take great pride in maintaining this hotel. It is perfectly located to all the sites. You can walk to the sites or use the Fast Pass bus which for 5.00 you can ride the bus all day. Their is a fast pass bus location right around the corner from the hotel. A must see is the Reading Market Terminal which is right behind the hotel. They are so many choices to eat. Amish cinnabun are a must = ). We also did the DUCK TOUR which was great. We had an awesome time and plan to return to this property. Thanks for such a great stay.

We stayed over the July 4th weekend for the fireworks, parade and concert on the Parkway. The hotel is located centrally to all Philadelphia's historical and cultural attractions as well as the train and bus lines. You can't ask for a better location. The staff was more than friendly. We arrived at 9am and our room was ready for us! The room was beautiful. Bed was comfortable and I had a great nights sleep. I didn't hear a sound from the hall, other rooms or the street. The room had a refrigerator, large flat screen, coffee maker and was extremely clean upon arrival. They had a very nice pool area with hot tub as well. Bathroom was a nice size and shower was great. I would highly recommend this hotel. I acquired this hotel on Priceline and hope I am lucky enough to get it again.

The hotel is wonderful. Nice and clean. One person stands out though. Her name is Bernita, "I hope I spelled it correctly" She was so friendly and helpful. Went out of her way to help us. We needed directions to Independence Hall and it was raining. She personally walked us through different buildings so that we wouldn't get as wet if we walked outside. I have never had such good service and I travel allot. In this day and time it is hard to even get a friendly person when you check in. Even gave us her umbrella. This kind of service is very rare. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who comes to this city. Getting to the hotel was a little tricky and we were on the backside of the hotel and could not get to where we needed to the valet parking. The front desk sent a valet employee to where we had our car illegally parked and took it from there for us. Great service.
