For the money, location and price we were very impressed with aloft. We wanted somewhere close to the airport (with a shuttle facility) but wasn't going to break the bank. aloft certainly delivered.
The free Shuttle Bus was fairly frequent - about once every half an hour with friendly drivers. It's not that obvious though when you leave the airport. The buses are the Sheraton ones.
The room size was excellent. Spacious with an absolutely huge plasma HD screen - probably the biggest I've ever seen with HD that really impressed me. A brilliant feature was a little box that enabled me to hook my netbook PC up to the big screen, where we watched my Slingbox and a bit of football. You can get the appropriate cables from the front desk for free.
The staff were excellent. This is a very modern hotel, with sleek design (love the fireplace in reception!), very comfy bed and exceptionally clean. The reception area is very well stocked and self-service. You help yourself to reasonably priced muffins or cereal and pay separately.
We did try out the pool, which was great, but the water temperature was too cold for our small baby. A good facility to have though. The bar staff were excellent and the cocktails and beers reasonably priced.
The complimentary toiletries were 'Bliss' branded and my wife was very happy with that. It's a large shower too. Tea & Coffee making facilities in the room are first class.
This was also one of the few hotels where the cot/crib was already in the room and we never had to chase.
As others have mentioned, it's a bit of a trek to get into the centre of Philly. You have to get the shuttle bus back to the airport and then the train into town. Expect a flat $30 taxi rate out to the hotel, which takes about 30 minutes from the centre of town.
I would definitely stay here again and look forward to the 'aloft' brand being rolled out across the world. It's a great concept and definitely the future of hotels. If I were Radisson I'd be seriously worried! This is the best value for money 'chain' hotel I think I've seen for a long time.
One more thing that I want to say. We are very well travelled, but the people of Philadelphia were without doubt the friendliest we've ever met. Whilst on the train, we were actually offered money by fellow passengers. Not because we couldn't afford the fare, but because if we had just a few more dollars, we could have bought a better ticket. We have never experienced this anywhere!
Everyone we met in Philly was a delight. Whilst looking at a map out on the street, we must have been offered help at least twice by passers-by. Even the hobos made us feel welcome! If you are a Philadelphian you should be very proud of your city and its people. You made us feel so welcome. Thank you for making our trip (our baby's first) a great experience.
