“Delicious Japanese fare”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

We are visiting Philadelphia this week, and wanted some good sushi. While Morimoto down the street was a place we probably would have enjoyed very much, we were concerned that it would be a stretch with our 3 year old, and instead went to Zento after reading many favorable reviews.

We made a reservation and were seated promptly upstairs. Drink and appetizers came in a flash, and so did our sushi order. The waiter was very friendly, and was efficient, but not hovering or impersonal. The food was delicious, every bit of it. We really liked the scallop carpaccio, the Peking duck hand roll, the nigiri hirame, and the unfiltered sake, along with the rest of our order. It's a little on the higher priced side, but well worth it - sushi is served at the right temperature and in the proper portions - they don't overdo the amount of rice or fillers, and we left satisfied but not overstuffed.

My only "constructive criticism" would be for the management to change the music in the place, which was slightly loud techno, for something less dominating (quieter ambient or even more traditional asian music?) to let diners chat and enjoy their experience even more!

Overall, we enjoyed it very much, and were impressed with their ability and interest in accommodating our young child. Would definitely return!!

“Great little sushi spot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

Tried Zento last week during restaurant week and discovered a great little restaurant. Like other reviewers said, it's a tiny restaurant but I really liked the coziness and there was plenty of room to be comfortable. We started with a white fish carpaccio and a tuna app that were amazing. Really fresh fish and a good portion too. Between the two of us we got four specialty rolls off the restaurant week menu and really enjoyed them, I think it was the Deep Sea roll that was a little heavy on the rice, but even so, still fresh and delicious. Wait staff was really attentive and friendly, exactly what you should/would expect. Would definitely recommend, but looking on the regular menu I did think the specialty rolls were a bit steep in price ( like $14-18) if you're going to pay that much, there are other just as good options....... Buuuut, the tofu cheesecake was outstanding!!! Try it. It's good. Also, this place is BYOB, which is Huge.

“It's not bad, but I had high expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Was eager to try this restaurant, since the chef was supposedly the sous chef at Morimoto's. Must say I came away somewhat disappointed. The food was fine, but not exceptional. The fotomaki was very nice. Udon noodles very tasty. Rainbow roll was good. Overall, the good was fine. But superlatives? No, not really. I can think of various Japanese places that are as good or better. Service was a bit off. The waiter didn't speak much English, it seemed. And not particularly professional either. Yes, it's fine to be a bit casual, but I much rather not be called "guys" repeatedly throughout the evening. And some time during the dinner, the waiter actually came and asked US if we still had more food coming. He asked US?
And somehow, throughout the evening, the speakers were playing Latin music (or something like that). For a while, I thought I was in Alma de Cuba...
It's not overly expensive, but cheap it's not. Considering the price, this really is not overly impressive. I don't think I'll be back.

“Excellent Sushi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

Our quick visit to Zento just before a concert was very rewarding. My sushi was exceptional, fresh and creamy while my guest's terriyaki was also wonderful. Attentive service and decent prices made this a find for us.
