My wife and two teens, along with myself were taken on this hike by family while visting Mammoth over 4th of July. They told us it wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either. So not knowing what to expect we set out and had a great time. Yes, there is elevation gain, and switchbacks, and it's not a Sunday stroll in the park, but the payoffs were amazing. Beautiful views of the lakes below and clean, crisp air. Amazing. Walking at a moderate pace it took us about an hour to reach Crystal Lake, and that included stopping occasionally for a sip of water, or just chatting with others on the trail. I would definitely recommend this hike for any age willing to give it a go. Just do it at whatever pace you are comfortable with. I think that's the key to any hike!
