“Worth the short walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

If you appreciate this type of thing it's worth spending the time to complete the short walk, approx 1 mile from the parking area to see this natural landmark. If you walk further, think it's another two mile, you'll see rainbow falls, also nice to see.

“Great hike, cool geological formation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

We took out dogs on this hike, and had our picture taken at the Postpile. We were dwarfed in comparison. We went during off-season, so we were allowed to drive ourself in, and easily found a place to park. During peak season, only busses are allowed to drive in during themajorityof the daylight hours.

“Amazing geological feature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

If you are visiting the Mammoth Lakes area, be certain to make the effort to visit the Devil's Postpile. This national monument requires that you walk about one mile from the nearest car park, which isn't that far to see such an unusual feature. If you have the energy to walk an extra three miles you can visit Rainbow falls at the same time. But if that's a little too far for you you can reach the falls from the falls trail head which is only about two mile walk. Both sights are stunning!

“Easy walking, very exposed drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Great place to visit, all the walks are easy and quite short in length. You can even do a bit of the John Muir Trail for bragging rights!

This place won my heart, it has a real backcountry feel, most of the irritating tourists just do the half mile walk to the postpile and back.

If driving in at the end or beginning of the season just be aware that the drive down to the valley is steep and narrow, 15 mph limit. There are no turnarounds so if you start it and don't like the drops you cannot back out. The way back up is worse than driving down as you are right next to the edge with sheer drops of 2,000 ft + for a few miles, additionally you will have to pass RV's coming with not a lot of room.If you don't like the sound of this maybe time you visit for when the shuttle is running. Memorable.

“Special Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

Of all of the National Parks and Monuments that I have been to, this is one of the most unique places that I have had the pleasure to visit. From the parking lot to the Monument itself, is a nice little walk without too much elevation change. But the hike to the top is very steep, but not too long in length. The view from the path shows the postpile in all its glory. The pictures are great, but you have to see this spectacle in person!
