“A place with character and helpful/friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

My husband and I had booked a room for three nights. When we arrived, a very helpful front desk clerk insisted that the room that we had been scheduled for was too hot - there is no air conditioning- and he had us look at several other options. I told him that we would be fine with the warm room since there were fans, but I wanted to make sure that we had a quiet room away from the restaurant and bar on the street side of the hotel. In the end, he upgraded us to a cute cabin behind the main hotel. He worked very hard to help us find a room that would work for us. The cabin was quiet, had a good king bed, and kitchenette. A small improvement would be to fix the windows that did not lock and clean the mini blinds. The continental breakfast was fine with a good selection and was served in the area that was the bar in the evening. This hotel is a bit worn around the edges, but worked well as a base for our stay in Mammoth.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room toward the back of the hotel.

We last stayed 14 years ago. It's still as good. Somewhere between a motel and a hotel. You can't fault the location. The place has a pool, and free continental breakfasts. Use it as a base for the beautiful Mammoth Lakes area, or as a launch pad to visit Yosemite. Plenty of good places to eat nearby.

Thank you for the kind words. We hope you’ll be back to visit before another 14 years pass! If you haven’t eaten at Petra’s Bistro, our on-site restaurant, you should give it a try on your next visit.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We stayed 3 nights at Alpenhof Lodge during the last week of July 2013. Our room was on the 2nd floor of the main lodge, over the lobby. The room was small, but clean and nicely decorated. There was a floor fan in the room - no A/C. The windows could be opened, but only one had a screen. We kept the window closed due to patrons from the adjacent pub partying outside each night, talking loudly and yelling obscenities. The bathroom was small and needed updating. The shower pressure was not good and wouldn't maintain an even temperature. One small bar of soap and one very small tube of shampoo was provided, but no conditioner. Housekeeping did not replenish. The lodge provides a nice continental breakfast in the adjoining restaurant. The lodge is in an excellent location in Mammoth and has reasonable room rates. However, you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the parking lot near Minaret Road

We appreciate your comments and will work with staff to make sure that amenities are always available, as we expect they should be in each room, every day. When we changed our amenity line, we opted to choose a product that was a 2-in-1 conditioning shampoo. We will continue working to ensure that our guest expectations will be met and hope you will consider staying with us again. Thank you again for your feedback.

The place it's self was very nice the room was clean and the free breakfast was ok.
I have stayed in quite a few 2 and 3 star hotels over the years that have been a LOT worse than this.
The only problem we had was the noise from the car park on a night.
What happens pretty much every night from what I can tell is the bar under the hotel kicks out at about 11 and after that everyone hangs around in the hotel car park finishing off drinks and generally being rowdy until about 12.30 1.00 am
If you don't mind this and will be one of those people out in the car park drinking and being noisy then this is the perfect place for you.
If you want a restful nights sleep without earplugs find somewhere else to stay.

Thank you for your feedback!

While our bar onsite closes at 11pm - the bars and clubs across the street in the Village close at 2am. At times we have patrons who come to the bar onsite then head across the street for the reaminder of the evening, only to come back through our property on thier way home (to thier rooms).
It's certainly an issue we will continure to address and do better to manage! Thank you.

I can say enough about our great, memorable stays at The Alpenhof. The wonderfully accommodating staff (Stacey, Ron, Aaron) this last trip up, the room upgrades over the years, distinctive rooms with tons of personality, free wireless now with a killer continental breakfast. I can't recommend The Alpenhof any more highly!!

We booked this hotel because we could not find anywhere to stay inside the Yosemite Park.
We were a bit mis-guided and we thought we were closed to it - forget it !
This is 2 hours away.
You are in a nice location in a winter skiing resort.
But I would not go there for skiing either (!)

The hotel itself:
- good free parking
- very cleaned rooms
- rooms are a bit "tired" and the mountain style is a bit heavy. Guess it works better under the snow - not in Summertime (!)
- wireless spotless
- breakfast: all cold and basic, all do it yourself. But all the essentials are there: cereals, coffee and tea, fruit, boiled eggs, bread and pastries, cheese and ham ...

Checking out:
They say they charge only for the first night whilst booking.
We stayed 2 nights.
I booked via BOOKING.COM and money was taken from my bank account while booking IN FULL for the 2 nights.
At checkout, I extensively explained this with both the attendant, then with the owner and the general manager.
Showing emails confirmations and bank confirmations.
Still, they insisted for me to pay for the second night - so at the end I paid for the second night TWICE.

I run a business as well. And if I see that a customer is not happy I always try to accomodate him and make him happy in some way. Maybe meeting mid-way.

They were not accommodating at all....

In all:
NOT HAPPY AT ALL. I would never go back to this hotel.

Thank you for your comments and feedback.

You are correct, we are a couple of hours from Yosemite Valley. However, we are only about 40 minutes to the Eastern Gate of Yosemite National Park and Tuolumne Meadows via Tioga Pass.

I am very sorry about your experience during check out. I can say with certainty that we followed the booking procedures exactly as they were stated. If you feel there is an issue, I'd ask that you please contact your bank so they can work with us directly, through merchant services, if there is any discrepency. It is important to us that we have done things properly for our guests.

Stayed here 3 nights after hiking John Muir Trail. Staff was extremely helpful. Clean rooms. Breakfast was delicious fresh squeezed orange juice and good coffee. Location is perfect. Great value, nice people and interesting guests. Lots of European travelers.
