Their reservation Web Site emails your credit card number over an unsecure connection. This is a grossly substandard practice! (I complained, but they refuse to change it.)

I won't stay there, but the Clocktower Cellar is still the best bar at Mammoth.

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Alpenhof on the
26th and 27th JUne 2003 after staying at a Best Western motel in Lake
Tahoe.

The Tahoe lodging had a 3 star rating while the Mammoth lodging hasa 2, so we noticed a difference between the places.

The Tahoe motel provided full free breakfast while the Alpenhof didn't
even provide a continental. In fact it's restaurant was closed. The
Alpenhof room was large and clean and the bathroom was adequate. The
building had a definite European look and feel about it. The front
office personnel had a rather indifferent attitude.

The location is good. It is close to some good restaurants, one of them
being the Whiskey Creek. There is also a market across the street.
There is a good size swimming pool and some grassy spots to sit.

One problem we encountered was that there is major construction going
on across the street. Some huge lodge type buildings and a gondola
system are being built. This area is to be a new village center. I
imagine this work will be going on for some time.

We stayed at the Alpenhof Lodge as a party of 6 in June 2002 while travelling through California. The rooms in the cabins were huge with sofas and fireplaces, TVs etc. a real comfortable stay. The surroundings are beautiful and the staff were excellent (very helpful and informative about the local area and the 'bears'). Morning coffee, OJ and Rolls served FREE of charge. Would definately stay here again - maybe even during the winter to try out the fireplace.
