“Pleasant but not for snobs.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

I stayed here as part of a USA road trip tour of the west side of the country.

I was only stopping in Mammoth lakes overnight and wanted to book somewhere cheap.

I booked cheap and I got cheap.

That's not necessarily a bad review....the lodge and room wasn't unliveable in. Just outdated, a bit damp smelling and no air conditioning.

The room did come with a fan tho, that blew the warm air around the room beautifully :)

Front desk staff were very friendly and pleasant. The car parking facilities were good.

The location was pretty good also, with a great bar across the road which had a good atmpsphere, friendly staff and served food right up until closing time.

I didn't use the breakfast facilities in the morning because all I could see were 3 questionable cereal dispensers, a couple of croissants and a coffee machine from 1973.

Would I stay here again? Yes. Would I stay for more than a couple of nights. No. Would I come here for my honeymoon or a romantic break? No.

Stayed at Sierra Lodge while my son raced at the Mammoth motocross track the last week of June. This hotel is very out dated no air conditioning, pool and had very odd hours for the little spa that they had and T.V. I think was from the early 80’s.

Extremely overpriced for the hotel accommodations .

As much as there is to do in the summer months as the winter months, I was unpleasantly surprised that the Sierra Lodge did not have air conditioning in this hotel. I am assuming since there was a little note outside all the hotel rooms stating that the hotel did not have air conditioning. While it was in the high 90 in Mammoth, I was amazed No air and No pool made for a very unpleasant stay at this hotel.

Although the hotel was very out dated, the overall Mammoth experience at the Mammoth MX Track and the town’s friendliness made up for the lack of the hotel.

Dear Lisa C.,

In reply to your recent review on TripAdvisor. I am sorry to hear that your recent stay at Sierra Lodge did not meet your expectations. Your primary complaint of the hotel focused on lack of air conditioning (a/c) and “value.” We do not advertise that we have a pool or air conditioning so I apologize if this was an assumption or expectation that was not met.

After reading your comments it is clear that the most important items for you are a/c and a pool. I would suggest to you that during a future stay in Mammoth during the summer months that you conduct an “amenity” search and make sure to select “a/c” and “pool” when deciding on where to stay. You will find that no other lodging facilities in Mammoth Lakes have both air conditioning and a pool in this “value” price range.

Had we known or been made aware of the displeasure this caused you earlier we would have offered to find you another lodging facility that checked all of your boxes. This exercise would have shown how much more expensive properties with both a/c and a pool are and would have helped to demonstrate to you that the Sierra Lodge IS a great value for the amenities provided.

Regarding “value;” Out of 31 motels/hotels listed on TripAdvisor, Sierra Lodge is consistently among the 5 or 6 least expensive lodging choices available in Mammoth Lakes. The overwhelming majority of the repeat guests we have have stayed at other value motel/hotels in the similar price range and come back to Sierra Lodge.

We do provide fans in all of the rooms and are very fortunate to have the temperatures in Mammoth drop by approximately 20+ degrees (from the mid day high) in the evening allowing the rooms to cool down very nicely on those rare hot days above 80-85 degrees. The temperature, while it may have felt like the high 90’s (was not in the high 90’s) was actually in the mid to high 80’s, an exception for Mammoth Lakes. As you may know the entire western United States experienced a heat wave with record breaking temperatures during your stay.

Closing hours for the outdoor hot tub is set at 10:00pm out of respect for the other guests in the hotel. This closing is time is universal for outdoor recreation areas for any lodging partners.

Sierra Lodge does not pretend to be anything it is not. As the vast majority of our happy guests have commented on TripAdvisor, we take pride in the friendliness of our staff, the cleanliness of our rooms, and the comfort and coziness of our property and yes, the “Value” of our product.

We are working on updating the hotel room amenities to include new furniture and televisions. We are also looking into (portable) air conditioning units for the rooms.

Thank you for your comments.

From the 1st day of dealing with Sierra Lodge to check out time, I was totally impressed. I called 3 months in advance to hold 20 rooms, I had absolutely no problems, they held them almost until the day we arrived. I brought 35 people, and everybody had a great comment about this place. The beds are so comfortable, the prices affordable, the community room was a great place for a large group to meet and visit while we were there. The staff was amazing, helpful with all our needs. even helping me make dinner reservations for 35 people. We totally enjoyed our stay at Sierra Lodge.

The staff was very friendly and gave good vibes. Rooms had refrigerator, microwave, sink, dishes, table, couch, and were quiet. The only down side was there was no elevator. We were a large group, and staff was glad to please us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and if you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground floor.

We stayed here for 4 nights this past week. Our room was very spacious, bed perfectly comfy, front desk extremely friendly and helpful. Yes it is a bit "outdated" but not at all in a cheap way. The free breakfast is what you would expect, basic, bagels, English muffins, toast, cereal, a few pastries, nothing fancy. The only complaint we had was not enough seating in the breakfast area. Definitely one thing they could improve on. Other than that our stay was great!

We enjoyed our stay in a spacious, airy room that had a small kitchenette plus a plush, comfy sofa that made it feel more like a small studio apartment than a hotel room. The "Great Room" where breakfast is served and guests clearly congregate evenings in ski season (wonderful big fireplace, so we can imagine the ambience) was a bonus, as was the outdoor hot tub located on the adjacent deck. Great way to wind down after hiking or skiing, or just driving the winding mountain roads to get there. We appreciated the ceramic coffee mugs set out for the guests rather than the usual styrofoam, although we do wish there had been more seating, since the place was full and we ended up juggling coffee and breakfast plates while standing over a small table to the side. (Our room was up the stairs, so we opted not to bring our breakfast there).

We also liked that we could walk to Mammoth Lakes Village, rather than having to fire up the motorcycle again after a long day in the saddle. We were a bit disappointed, however, to discover that there were no sidewalks, so that we had to walk uphill to the village on the busy road, which at least had a bike trail most of the way. As a bonus, though, we picked up some wonderful giant pine cones that had fallen along the roadside, and we will enjoy seeing them on our mantel come Christmas. And it wasn't far at all to walk, much better than lodging down or up the hill and having to drive and park.

Our hosts were friendly and helpful. We especially appreciated the dining suggestions, and we ended up having a wonderful meal at a place we might not have found ourselves, Petra's, where the Happy Hour (with good food and drink at reduced prices) was a great alternative to the regular dinner menu (that had excellent offerings at somewhat higher prices that no doubt were worth it).

We do wish that we had gotten one of the rooms with a balcony, so that we might have had a mountain view at least to the side, rather than looking across a busy drive to a motel directly facing into our room, not very far away. The area where the lodge is located is a bit congested, with several motels packed closely in. We didn't like having to keep the curtains drawn for privacy, when we would have preferred some day light streaming in. And it was a shame, in such a glorious environment, not to have a view of nature. If we return, as we hope to, we will select a more private room with a mountain view.

All in all, it was a very pleasant stay and very good value for such a well-located, comfortable, spacious, and friendly place.

My friend and I stayed less than a week. The place was reasonably priced and served our purposes, which were to stay close to the mountain, have a soak in the hot tub after skiing, and lodge in comfort. I would have preferred the rooms to have a small desk or something to use my laptop, but what the rooms lacked in furniture, the staff made up for in friendliness.
