McCarthy's is a small, intimate dining café which features traditional Irish music some nights. Our family particularly enjoys this café on Friday evenings, when fish & chips are offered. The fish is fresh, crispy and excellent! We like the pricing options, too. You can order various portion sizes, and pay accordingly. The vanilla tea is great, or bring your own spirits.
Menu items are limited but often feature favorites such as bangers and mash, which my son enjoyed a great deal, or shepherd's pie. We enjoy the fish and usually all in our party get the same so unfortunately I cannot give extensive advice about the various menu items.
Service is variable; sometimes it is attentive, while at other times, a bit slow...is this the Irish way? Perhaps...there is a laid back atmosphere. On one visit, they were out of ketchup, which was curious because every table in the restaurant was there that evening for fish & chips. It was curious why someone didn't run out to stock up for this condiment that is so commonly served with their specialty dish that evening. The manager wasn't concerned; he suggested vinegar, instead, which is a nice option for those who choose it. For others (at our table and surrounding tables) there was some grumbling.
Be sure to tour the adjacent Donegal Square for some gift ideas with a Celtic theme. They have jewelry, clothing, teapots and teas, books and scarves and the friendly staff can help you select the perfect gift. We bought a gorgeous wool plaid tie for only $25 for a little add-on stocking stuffer and there are many items of various price ranges that allow for a variety of personal treats or gift choices.
