I don't have a huge sweet tooth, so I'm not often tempted by ice cream, but the Bethlehem Dairy Store (also known as The Cup) has been a popular ice cream shop for my family for a long time. Many years ago as a kid, I remember going with my dad in the summer for his favorite homemade ice cream flavor: kiwi. We'd never had it anywhere else and we haven't seen at the Cup in a long time. They now have two locations: the original store on Linden Street just north of Liberty High School and a store in Campus Square at Lehigh University, where New Street ends on the South Side of Bethlehem.
I went with my husband last week for the first time in quite awhile, and I was incredibly disappointed. The quality of the ice cream is still good and they still offer a lot of typical flavors, but it's certainly not the best ice cream I've ever had. Also, it gets crowded and the place is basically staffed by teenagers. It can get chaotic. My husband actually got so fed up with not being waited on (there was no real semblance of a line) that he came out to sit with our dog and sent me in to order. I saw the same mess that he did at the counter. When I finally did get helped, it was after one of the scoopers spent a few minutes chitchatting with a friend in line who was already being helped. That's not acceptable when there is a line of customers out the door, waiting to be served. It wasn't the kind of relaxing outing I'd hoped for when we decided to visit.
All in all, if you're in the neighborhood and you're in the mood for ice cream, you're likely to enjoy what they have. Had it not been for the terrible service, I would have given them an Average rating. Personally, I think the lesser known Nuts About Ice Cream shop, which is just a few blocks down the street from the Cup, offers better quality ice cream, flavors that are way more unique, and much better service.
