I went here for a day trip which was enough to get a brief look, but to really appreciate this place I think you need to stay for a couple of days and move outside of the paved roads. Dante's view, the Artist Drive, the Devils golf course and Badwater should be on the "mandatory" list of places to visit in Death Valley.

This is a wonderfully run, carefully managed national park - as an indication, some of the car parks associated with some of the walking trails are carefully hidden from view until the last minute, so that your views of the rocks are not disturbed by parked cars etc.
Very well maintained roads (better than some interstates we have driven on)
We can particularly recommend the Artist Drive in late afternoon when the colours (especially on a cloudy day) are just stunning.
This is a very large park with many different kinds of hiking trails and viewing areas. Some of the "trails" can even been done in your car. There's so much to see that it's impossible in only a day or 2. I went in July and really enjoyed the intense heat, but that's just me. Go in the fall or spring if your not into the heat and bring lots of water. Try to plan out the spots you wish to see so your not driving hours in the park between locations.
