The Golden Canyon hike is a very good hike. After a mile or so you have the option to continue on a trail to Zabriskie Point or Gower Gulch. This is also an interesting trail, as long as you are climbing. There are good views from above. The Gower Gulch Loop eventually becomes a separate trail that descends into a wash and loops back to the parking lot; the entire loop is 4 miles. Most people should turn back before descending into the Gower Gulch wash, because: 1) there is not much interesting to see; 2) there are not many other hikers, the terrain is uneven, the trail is not well-marked; as long as you are following a downward path that a stream would follow, you are on the right path; 3) after you have gone too far to turn back, the trail drops very steeply for about 25 feet, and at one point (for less than 10 feet) you walk on a narrow path next to a steep cliff.
