Well worth the long slow drive. Take the trail from Ubehebe crater -- you cannot miss it. The trail is 27 miles long to the racetrack and varies from extreme washboard to rocks to smooth sand, speeds are between 5 and 20 MPH -- don't rush take your time you don't want a puncture out here. The route is easy to follow the only turn off is at Teakettle junction (to the old mine) but you just go straight ahead, We drove a 4 x 4 but saw two RV's and one normal road car making the trip.
BE AWARE -- this is a long off road drive with no cell phone coverage so take water, food and good footwear in case you have to walk out. but don't be put off, drive sensibly and you will have no problems.
After 2 hours of driving you eventually reach the Racetrack, drive to the far end (another 2 miles) get out and walk across the lake bed you won't be disappointed it's everything (hopefully) you expect it to be
Oh -- Watch out for the Tarantulas -- big, Hairy and quite friendly
