“Smithsonian Museum in Ohio”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

This is a wonderful museum that is right up there with the Smithsonian Air and Space Museums in Washington DC. Three giant hangers (one more coming soon!) of planes arranged in historical/chronological order. It's like walking through an aviation timeline right up to the present. They do not have a Space Shuttle yet, but that is coming soon as a part of their new hanger. Get there early and take the annex tour. You'll get to see and walk through several Air Force One planes, including JFK's plane. There is a huge gift shop and an Omnimax Theater. And the absolute best part -- IT"S FREE!!!!!!!

“Amazing - just allow heaps of time !!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Went for a quick walk through with friends. The place is huge with so many aircraft and other displays - and so well put together. The best air museum I've seen anywhere. You have to see it if you have the time.

“Love this museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Anytime I get to Dayton I stop in here. Absolutely the most interesting place to visit for a long day of walking...plus it is free! All sorts of aircraft, constantly changing and one of the best places to visit in Ohio. Highly recommend!

“Worth The Trip to Dayton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

When we were visiting the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy museum our guide recommended that we also visit this facility. As we were able to arrange a stop over in Dayton on our return from Florida, we decided to go for a visit. We are certainly glad that we did.
We arrived at 8:55 a.m. for the 9:00 a.m. opening and immediately signed up for the free tour to the Presidential Hanger. This is the location of the airplanes used by presidents such as Truman, Kennedy, Roosevelt and Eisenhower (including the plane that took JFK's body home from Dallas and in which Lyndon Johnson was sworn in). It also includes many 0ne-of-a-kind experimental aircraft. Do book this tour early. Even though were were there on Dec. 28, definitely the off season and the day after a major snowstorm, this tour was fully booked by 10:30.
This is a big museum. You really need a full day to see it (5-6 hours anyway). Unfortunately, we only had 4.5 hours available to us and could not spend the time needed to see everything properly. We will definitely be back. Another reviewer noted that this museum is better than both Smithsonian Air and Space museums. I'm not sure that I agree - the Udvar-Hazy museum, in particular, was amazing. I would say that this one is "as good" but not better. They do complement each other well. I was surprised at how little overlap there was in the exhibits. If you have been to Washingon and enjoyed both of the air and space museums there, then come here as well. You won't be disappointed.
In addition to the Presidential tour, there is also a free museum tour. We did not take this due to time constraints but I definitely want to do so next time. There is also an IMAX which we did not go to for the same reasons and outdoor exhibits that we did not visit for reasons of both time and weather.
Admission is free and the museum is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. except for Christmas, New Year's and Thanksgiving. Parking is also free. You will need government issued photo ID if a US citizen and a passport otherwise to take the Presidential tour.
