As someone who frequently stays in Bed and Breakfasts, I did not find the Marl Inn to be place I would stay another night. In fact, we booked the room for two nights: on morning one, we tried to find another place to stay.
The experience started off badly when we arrived at 7:00p.m. to a dark room. Several of the lights did not work in the room. A few minutes later, we discovered neither did the t.v. remote.
As I explored more of the room, I found used items for guests (half empty sugar packets, coffee, and toiletries). Most of the magazines and maps provided were very dated. The curtains were falling off the wall, too. Plus, the furniture was mismatched and even stained in some areas.
The night got worse when we could not sleep because of all the noise the host family was making. We ended up falling asleep around 2:00a.m, only to be woken up by the sound of the family’s dog barking off and on throughout the morning.
After an extremely restless night, we wanted to explore Yorktown. We were looking forward to riding the free bikes provided by the B&B until we saw them. The tires had very little air in them; the parts were extremely rusted; and the seats were very uncomfortable. (Not to mention, we had to ride the bikes out of the yard that was filled with dog droppings.)
Since, we knew we were not going to have much fun at the B&B we stayed out most of the day and evening. We came back to the sounds of the family, again, including the dog. But worse of all, the heat in the room was about 85 Degrees. We were so hot we had to open most of the windows in the suite.
We were up bright and early to the smell of breakfast—6:00a.m. Breakfast was served at 9:00a.m.; so, one can image how cold some of it was. Granted, breakfast the first morning was good—Crab and Egg Benedict—but, I think I could have gotten something comparable at any restaurant in town.
Lastly, we were not impressed with the host family. They were not sociable—in fact, we only meet Seldon for a few minutes throughout our stay. We didn’t find him helpful. Seldon told us very little information about the area.
If you want to stay at a house away from home, this place is ideal; but if you are looking for a relaxing getaway Marl Inn did not provide it for us.
