“'Seedy & Unsafe'.....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

This Inn used to be a great roadside stop while visiting Ventura or, maybe just passing thru. The property has a nice pool outside to sit and read/lounge and, a wonderful little Coffee Shop serving up really good, homestyle cooking. The Mngmnt., 'Maronee' is very helpful & nice. Been coming to the property for years. Fast forward to recent times and my last visit. These days the place attracts (primarily) traveling Contractors and Utility workers, who clog up the parking lots with their annoying 'hemi-engine' trucks all @ once revving up 5/6 a.m. mornings, disturbing sleeping guests. The noise annoyance of this alone, has run me off the property. Yes the rooms are older, but clean. Nice bathroom facilities. Railroad doesn't bother me. However, the budget seeking workers have now "pitched an encampment" at this property and are loud & rowdy weekday evenings w/ noticable beer drinking and leering, of female customers. Just scarey groups. Also, there are (other) assorted 'seedy types' who are visiting the Motel and on my recent stay of (2) nites, I observed a Ventura Co. police car at the property late one eve; that happens quite frequently at this VI. Seen it before....The place doesn't hold the same charm or, safety that it did so many years ago. Just a lower class of dwellers and therefore, not a hotel I would recommend staying with, especially if you are female. There is another chain right around the corner on the famous Ventura boardwalk - nicer views and the absence of Utility trucks & rowdy crowds - price prohibitive for them. Good thing.

Room Tip: Do not select rooms upstairs toward the back of property behind the swimming pool - this is generall...

Thank you for the review. We have several oil field workers who stay at the hotel. We try to keep them all together (rooms all together) to minimize the early morning noise as they leave for work. I don't notice them outside of their rooms after 7 pm or so, mainly because they get up so early. I will check out the leering comment. I will have someone hang out around those rooms for the next week or two (each crew stays one week and is gone one week, while another crew alternates with them) and report back to me on what they find. I can then talk to the bosses and they will take action to make sure it does not continue. When we have had a problem with a guest in the past, the company has been swift in dealing with it, sometimes even letting that person go. The Ventura PD stops by here once a day for the most part. They come in the lobby and chat with the staff, ask about any problems and leave. They also like the restaurant.

This is about the fourth time we have stayed over the years. Good value, comfy rooms, excellent friendly and helpful staff. We had a problem with the tv and the staff sorted things out very quickly and to our satisfaction. Hotel is in a great location, minutes from the beach and a few minutes from the town centre, plus good restaurant on site. Enjoyable stay.

After years of having breakfast at The Vagabond Cafe, I had occasion to need lodging locally, so I tried the Inn. After several stays there, I found the Inn acceptable, but had issues with unruly and inconsiderate guests. This has caused me to stay at other facilities. The Vagabond Inn is clean, the staff are helpful and friendly, but the proximity to central Ventura and the beaches seemed to attract some unruly patrons. Also, the nearby railroad tracks adds another noise source, as trains do rumble through and blow their whistle.
If you need a quiet place to stay, you may want to consider other options.

Thank you for reviewing our hotel. We have quiet time after 10 pm, but it doesn't always work. Because we are in such a good location, most of our guests can walk downtown to the restaurants and clubs. We see them coming back sometimes very late and happy. For the most part, they just go to bed, but on occasion, especially if there is a group of people all staying with several rooms, the party goes on. If you alert us, we have the opportunity to go and talk to them. For the most part, people are considerate after we ask them to call it a night. We will evict people if we can't get then to quiet down, but of course, that is a last resort. If we don't notice the problem before you do, please call the front desk and someone will go out and investigate. Someone is always on duty, 24/7.

Not a lot to look at from the outside, but the Vagabond has a lot going for it. The rooms are kept up, the service is great (Jenny, I'm talking to you!) and the location can't be beat. Walking distance from downtown, and a short walk from a bridge that crosses the freeway and train tracks delivers you to the Ventura Pier and a very good seafood restaurant. Speaking of restaurants, the diner-style place on the premises is somewhere you'll want to vist even if you sleep somewhere else. "Old School" with great service and a good menu.
Wifi works and TV gets HBO and lots of other channels.
I can't say the place is perfect though. Soundproofing is poor. Any noise in the parking lot will be heard easily (Front wall is mostly window, ceiling to floor). The guy in the next room had a cold or the flu. We heard every cough, sneeze and word out of his mouth. Things did quiet down later though. Advice: Set the switch on the wall by the TV to "cool" and turn on the AC unit above the fridge to "fan only". The room held the heat we ran earlier and never got cold.
On another review, rooms 101-104 are recommended. we had 103, and it seemed to be a good choice, though second floor might be better. The rooms in the back are near the pool and train tracks, so if you stay back there, bring earplugs.
We started out irritated. We left thinking we'll probably return.

Room Tip: Away from the back.

Thank you for the review. I will make sure that Jenny sees this review and your kind words. I'm glad you are thinking you will return. The walls are a bit thin. We refurbish several rooms each year and your comments are appreciated. I will mention to the owner that we should look at the possibilities of better soundproofing when we are redoing the rooms.

Ventura is our mid point when we travel to San Diego. We originally stayed at Vagabond inn because we always had our dog. The location is great if you surf or like shopping. The down town section of Ventura is only 2 blocks away. Good location, more for the budget minded and not for the amenity crowd. Great breakfast at the cafe.

Room Tip: train tracks behind motel. can get loud.

Thank you for the nice review. The location is great here and it is not uncommon to see surfboards and beach towels here. We are looking forward to seeing you again sometime soon!

After reading recent reviews of this motel, we definitely had some concerns -- but I couldn't resist the reasonable rates, We have stayed at many places overnight in Ventura and this has been the best value so far ($74 total). The location is excellent and within walking distance to Ventura Pier and beach. After checking in, we enjoyed a short walk to the pier and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. As noted in other reviews, there were definitely some "vagabonds" in the vicinity but I think that's to be expected in many beach communities. We never felt we weren't safe -- but we took our usual precautions. The room was clean and quiet. The "continental breakfast" was sparse but we had coffee, refrigerator, and microwave in the room. Overall, we would stay here again.

Thank you for the kind review. We don't serve the kind of breakfast that you find in some of the nicer hotels because we don't have a commercial kitchen and the City of Ventura requires that you have one if you serve food. We can only serve things that are individually packaged. Currently, we have danish, muffins, scones, croissants, oatmeal packets and breakfast bars. We do have a restaurant on the property that is very popular here in Ventura. They have great food and offer a weekday (Monday through Friday) breakfast special if ordered before 11am.

This my personal favorite hotel in Ventura for my regular business trips.
The staff is very helpful and I really like the location being so close to the restaurants and shops in the downtown area.
It's quiet at night, the beds are comfy, the familys with children have fun by the pool and it's nice to see dogs are allowed.
My personal favorite housekeeper is Delores, she's as nice as can be and very accomodating to my schedule. Dan G. and Robert A., the maintenance men are always there for you to help with heavy luggage. as well.
Desk staff is good and very helpful with directions around town.
I'll be back!
