“Poor customer service at a cheap hotel at not such a cheap rate”

Clocktower Inn Hotel

If I had paid $50 for this room, I would probably have no complaints. However, I don't think we got our $120 worth - even at Labor Day Rates! We booked this hotel about a week ahead of time on Expedia. We were looking for a decent hotel at a decent rate within walking distance to Main Street and the Beach. That we got. However, I don't think I'd stay at the Clock Tower again.

We arrived at 4pm - an hour after check in time - and were checked into a dirty room. (To her "credit" the clerk warned us that she hoped the room would be clean, and why didn't we go up and check... A better quality hotel might have sent someone to check for us - or might have made sure they put us in a clean room, since the place was clearly not full...) I asked for an upgrade, since it was after check in time, and she gave us a room with a balcony - somewhat grudginly. I am quite sure that had I not asked, she would have suggested we wait for our room to be cleaned.

The "upgraded" room was TINY, and unimpressive, but clean. For one night, it would do. After spending the evening in Ventura, we returned to our room. We were surprised to receive a call from the front desk at 10:30 PM - we were already in bed - asking if we had booked our stay on Expedia. We said yes, and that was all they wanted to know. We're still not sure what that call was all about, or why it came so late in the evening.

After our late night call - we were awakened by a knock at the door at 6:30 in the morning by housekeeping. Granted, we failed to put the "do not disturb" sign on our door, but 6:30 am??? I'm not sure if they only have one cleaning person on staff, and it takes her from 6am until 4pm to clean all the rooms or what, but we were not thrilled by the early wake up.

The knock did give us an early start, and we stopped by the continental breakfast. Nothing impressive (cereal, pastry, breads, etc) - but I do have to say the coffee was great. Much better than your typical hotel cont breakfast coffee. Then we had one final laugh from the hotel front desk staff - when we checked out, the front desk person (different girl from day before) could find no record of us even being checked in. Too bad we paid in advance on Expedia... we might have gotten a free stay!

So, to summarize - staff are either not so bright, or could use a customer service training class. Hotel and rooms are clean, and you are withing walking distance to Main Street and the beach - but don't expect anything spectacular.

This hotel is fine if you want a discout hotel. Best word to describe it is clean, but "tattered". Clocktower could use and remodel, but the place is a little old.

Pos: The place is clean (bathroom and room), descent location to Main St. and Highway. No gym on premises, but access to one a few blocks away which is complimentary. Simple but descent breakfast offered, small hot tub.

Neg: Not best location, a little musty, bad control for TV, no ironing board in room (must get from front desk). Could do with new furniture and carpet.

Simply, if looking for discount and sutiable, it will work. Similar to Motel 6 with charater, larger rooms and gen. a bit more.

Before I begin, I must say that ultimatley I did not end up staying at this hotel so I cannot comment on the cleanliness of the rooms nor any of the amenities. After reading some of the reviews of this property on this site, I am glad I didn't stay. Here's my story:

I made reservations through Hotwire 64 days prior to my arrival. My family was scheduled to stay five nights. When I attempted to check in, the young lady behind the desk told me that the manager will have to check me in and asked me to have a seat while she summoned the him. After nearly 20 minutes of waiting, I asked the young lady if there was aproblem with my reservation and why she couldn't check me in. Again, with no explanation, she repeated that the manager would have to take care of me and he would be right in. He arrived a few moments later and told me that I was being "walked" to a different hotel because this hotel was overbooked and no rooms available for the first four nights of my stay. However, they could accomodate me the fifth night. The hotel they were "walking" me to was adjacent to the local Greyhound Bus station and had a steady stream of vagrants and generally transient-type people hanging around it at all hours of the night. What is insulting is that the Clocktower manager told me the other hotel was comparable to the Clocktower had the audacity to say that I wouldn't have to cover the cover the difference in room rates! After checking out the other motel and seeing the condition it was in and the type of people hanging around it, I returned to the clocktower and spoke with the manager again. Ths time the young lady was very rude to me, walked away from me as asked her to get the manager. This time, I asked the manager why I was bumped. He said that there was a problem with the hotwire system and the rooms should not have been sold at the rate they were sold at and in fact my reserved rate was less than half of their regular "rack" rate. I asked him to repeat himself because I couldn't believe what he was telling me. It appeared that he realized he probably shouldn't have said that and then told me that he cannot discuss the reason my reservation was not honored. He refused to walk us to a different property. We ended up staying at a nearby hotel and take the matter up with Hotwire.

Due to my experience, I cannot recommend this property to anyone. I have also lodged a complaint with Hotwire to remove this property from their system so others aren't treated the same way in the future.

Do not stay at this hotel!!!! The entire hotel is run down and old. The room we first got stuck in was so run down and old looking and SMELLY we new from the moment we walked in, we were going to have problems. We opened our blinds on the windows to find that there was a public park with nothing but bums laying all over the grass.....right outside our windows. Being that my girlfriends and I felt uneasy about that, we demanded we change rooms. So, they put us in the same corner, just up on the top floor. I cannot begin to tell you how discusting the furniture, bathroom, bedding etc. was. Everything was extremely dusty and just old. The bathroom also was very disappointing. The shower wouldn't even turn off all the way and there was no hot water. To top it off, the hotel was haunted!!! My girlfriends and I were talking to the front desk and it somehow came up in discussion about the hotel being haunted. And the lady told us there had been sightings and stories about a particular area in the hotel having more activity with this so called haunting.....and it so happened to be in the building and floor as our room. So, all of us were freaked out the entire stay and did not get any sleep. There was also no complimentary breakfast or anything. We honestly didn't see a soul staying in that hotel other than us four girls. It was odd. Do NOT stay at this hotel. Worst experience ever!!!!!

In all fairness, the best way to describe this hotel is, ... it's just a hotel. Part of the Clarion/Choice group, you might expect bells and whistles somewhere, but not to be found.
We stayed for a few nights on a hot July weekend. We ended up moving rooms after the first night as our daughter had her own room, but they were unable to put them next to each other. We were in one building on the first floor, and she was on the second floor of the next building.
Our cable TV only seemed to get about 8 channels. No big deal, but you are paying for "quality". The breakfast was mediocre, a few choices of wonder bread and those pastries from Costco that you buy in the 16-pack. They were always out of coffee, and no one cleaned the eating area at all. They have a jacuzzi between the buildings, that I used once. I needed some extra towels for the spa, they said they'd bring them to me. Never did.
Also, I keep saying "they". The hotel seemed very understaffed, only one "receptionist" and a couple of women cleaning the rooms.
One of the funniest things we did see was their wine and cheese afternoon. Like a previous reviewer on this site, they said it was box wine and cheese whiz. They're 100% correct but they failed to mentioned one other important part............the saltine crackers!!!!!
This was the most ridiculous spread I'd ever seen.
All in all, it was our first time in Ventura, it was centrally located, parking was not a problem, it's right near the Mission and popular Main St., but it surprise me that a hotel with a seemingly historical past (hence the real clock tower, though the time on it was always an hour off), wouldn't spend a couple of bucks to clean the breakfast area, make the food a bit more pleasant, and at least use the quality crackers from Safeway...
