“Love it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

We have stayed here many times over the years. It is true it is not fancy and there is no elevator. The rooms could use some TLC but they are comfortable and many of them are quite large. The location and breakfast at Nona'a are fabulous and make up for the rooms short coming on decor. When you subtract the cost of breakfast (and the breakfast is great) the cost of the room is extremely reasonable! You can walk to anywhere. The beach is about three blocks away and there are great restaurants all around. We come up from San Diego to do a coastal bike ride. The hotel lets us store our bikes in a room by the lobby. The staff has always been very helpful and accommodating. We always look forward to a return visit and would not consider staying anywhere else. Recommend staying in a room towards the middle of the hotel because the rooms on street and parking lot get quite a bit of noise from the restaurants and nearby bar.

We have stayed here for years! Great location, attentive service and delightful ambiance! Love the wine and cheese in the afternoons, and full breakfast in morning in Nona's Courtyard! Highly recommended!!!

the place is very charming, in a european bed and breakfast style. It needs updates, but even without them the free breakfast is above average and the service can be great depending in how busy they are at any given time, you can get lucky!
Our room faced cafe fiore on california st, the place can get loud late ... we had too much fun to care by the time we reached our bed.

Room Tip: no california st facing rooms or room #20, door faces courtyard.

Called ahead asked about room for three, since we were visiting colleges with our 16 year old son. "Fold out couch" was a fold out easy chair. We didn't stay.

Place is older and tired - could be cute and comfortable with some TLC and a little investment.

So – I’m having a hard time thinking what to write about this place as I didn’t love it enough to rave about it, and I didn’t hate it enough to hammer it. “Adequate” is probably the word I guess…

For one thing (and this is an aside since it doesn’t really effect the actual visit): They have no website! It’s 2012. I know dogs that have websites…

The front desk people were friendly and pretty helpful – but the servers for our (very tasty) breakfast were not (and there were only two couples at breakfast). Went and got my own coffee a couple of times.
Our original room was facing California Street which I was told (to their credit) would be noisy. What I didn’t know was the restaurant across the street has live music til 2:00 am. Oops. So we requested a room change which was done with no problem. But unfortunately, I guess they were fixing some steel door just outside our window, so all Monday afternoon there was non-stop hammering and banging. Being that we went there to relax – that was kind of a problem. All in all – I just got a feeling of mediocrity for the whole visit – which is a shame, because the building and restaurant are very cool.

Room Tip: Spend a couple of extra bucks and get a room facing the courtyard...

We used to stay here years ago every so often and really enjoyed their quiet and understated elegance. The courtyard cafe (Nona's) was lovely and nicely appointed. The food was excellent.

We stayed recently with great anticipation on our trip to Northern CA from AZ. Wow, were we disappointed. The first night, we had the room right off the courtyard, as I did not want to tackle the stairs, because of a recent surgery. The room was so bad they should not even rent it out. No AC, no ambience at all. It must have been close to 90 degrees in there when we arrived. The bathroom was terrible. The furniture had been replaced by some 1980s ugly, ugly desk. Previously, the furniture had an antique feel to go with the rest of this beautiful building. Our breakfast was not cooked the way it was ordered. On the way home, we chose a different, air conditioned room. It was filthy. Had a long hair on the sink, no soap in the dispenser, inconvenient tiny bathroom. The breakfast again, was not cooked to order and their coffee pot was broken. They seem to have forgotten how to provide an ambience of elegance. This place needs a buyer with some money to put into it. It is a aging beauty, not being cared for properly, and we were very sad to see that. Sadly, I do not recommend staying here.

A friend and I were looking for a place that was fairly close to the Ventura Ferry so it would be easy to make it to an early morning hike to the Channel Islands. We prefer hotels that don't have that "nationwide chain" feeling and that's in a walkable neighborhoods. The Bella Maggiore Inn was perfect for that and we had a great time. One issue.... but what's important is the staff was very proactive to solve the issue right away. If you're not into the party scene and need to get to get some sleep at a decent hour, do not get a room facing the street. It's a cute little beach town during the day. But, as soon as night falls, a night club across the street brings a huge crowd. I felt like the night club was inside my hotel room it was so loud. Me, flying in and still being 2 hours ahead, I was NOT a happy camper. But, the following morning, I let them . The staff was apologetic, very professional and resolved the problem by finding another room for me right away. Overall, Ventura's a very walkable town and has a great eclectic beach-town charm. The hotel was in a great location (during the day) and I still highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you're not the partying night club 20-something type, do not get a room facing the street on...
