“A Nice Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Most of the reviewers are right. The hotel is dated and not in the best shape, but if you can get past that and welcome the experience of staying in a historic and fascinating place for a night or two, you won't regret it. It's clean and comfortable. The staff is great, the food is good, the bar is fantastic, and the ambiance is priceless. Given it's low price (especially if paying govt or company rate), it's just as nice as what you'll get at a modern chain hotel for business travelers. I must admit though, the only reason I booked it while on business is that my parents stayed here on their honeymoon in 1944 while my dad was on his way to flight training. I don't think it changed a bit since then, which in my case made the stay special.

The hotel sits in the heart of downtown El Paso. It has a parking garage that you can use for just $5/day which we considered a plus. The lobby bar is impressive and the buidling itself unique and historic. The A/C worked well and the beds were comfortable.

The rooms were not very nice ... stained carpet, old TVs, loud A/C. The bathroom was not very clean or inviting. Hairs on the floor and in the tub and the tile floor was chipped and stained with grime.

The onsite restaurant was fine, the bar prices were reasonable, vending machine prices were really cheap. The breakfast buffet was good.

Overall for the price we paid, it was okay. If we had paid alot, I would have given it a rating of 2.

Room Tip: don't stay on the Plaza side if you go to bed early. On Friday, there was a lot of people at th...

I stayed here on business for two nights. I was looking for a big, downtown full service hotel, and that's exactly what the Camino Real is. After a slight delay at check-in, I was upgraded to a Jr/ Suite. It was huge, although a little dated. The furniture was heavy and still in good condition. The bed was firm and very comfortable and had quality sheets.
The bar is something to see with the original Tiffany glass dome, and the formal restuarant has an attractive and historic feeling; the food and service was very good. The other restuarant is Heurta's, which served a really good breakfast at $11.00 extra.
A beautiful older hotel with lots of ammenities and a friendly staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a upgrade room.

Perfect downtown hotel 6 block from the mex border. Nicest people. Hotel is a little run down but the history kind of makes for it.

Rooms are spacious (some tlc will help)

Restaurants (Awesome Mexican food (Mexican style food bar deal)

Dome Bar was awesome.

I will recommend this place if you're staying for a 1 - 2 days in El Paso, not much to do in the area but the architecture is very unique around the area.

You pull up and it looks like the set of some movie where there's no one left on earth. Then you go in the lobby and it looks like the day after an estate sale and the only thing left are things that are nailed down. But when you get to the front desk and talk to the friendly staff (as in Will), the reasons to turn around start disappearing. You go on up to the room that badly needs remodeling and updating so you decide to go have a drink in the bar with the famous Tiffany dome. All you can focus on is the tacky chrome chairs but again, that goes away after you talk to the outgoing young man behind the bar. The restaurant is closed, there's no one in the cafe and we take that as a bad sign so we walk across the street for dinner. So why stay? Because if you don't, these gems will disappear and the only choice will be the aesthetic chains that are the fast foods of spending the night travels. It takes a little more time to get off of I-10 and yes, downtown El Paso is DEE-PRESS-ING but, the rooms are clean, the rates are very good, and the staff is so professional and friendly. It's not their fault the Camino Real corporation isn't keeping it up and taking pride in this historical gem.

Room Tip: The executive lounge is spotty-never figured out hours. Try The Oasis across the street for casual...

Great prices for this beautiful old hotel. We always use the Camino Real as our base when visiting Southern New Mexico, and El Paso. For a small price you can include breakfast, which we always do. Great front desk, extra large rooms, good beds, and excellent AC.

Walk inside and it is a very impressive place! The high domed stained glass ceiling is impressive. There is old world charm and the staff is very friendly. The room we had was very spacious, which was nice. Our room was west facing and when we arrived in the late summer afternoon, the A/C was off and the room was very hot. Even at full blast cold setting, you could barely feel the air. It took all night to cool the room down, so the first night was very uncomfortable. That same evening, we went to the rooftop pool to cool down. What a shock when we got there! This tiny old and extremely cloudy pool was it..... yuck! We sat outside for a few minutes, then headed back to our warm room. BY morning the room was cool and stayed cool the next day as long as we left the A/C on cold high and the drapes closed to the sun. The rooms need updating, at least in the carpeting as they were dirty. Not bad for the price (hotwire) but not good if we had paid a rack rate! I did like the underground secured parking garage, for which the fee was minimal.

Room Tip: Stay away from a west facing room in the summer!
