“World's Greatest Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2008

Staying at the Empress is an unforgettable experience that should be repeated as often as possible. The building, rooms, furnishings, grounds, owners, food, and hostesses are all fabulous. I highly recommend the Empress and urge everyone to visit this excellent facility.

I was on my way back to Houston from a visit with family and needed a nice place to stay for a night. The Empress was everything we had heard it would be. The decorations for Christmas transported us back into the Victorian Era where we were able to relax for an evening. Our room was lovely down to the smallest detail from the cozy feather bed to the clawfoot tub. The gourmet breakfast was amazing and the service by the elegant and handsome butler was outstanding. We were well rested and ready to continue on our journey home with a pleasant Christmas after glow from another time.
I would not hesitate to stay in the Empress again when we come through Little Rock. In this case, you definitely get what you pay for.

We spent our Honeymoon night in the Majestic Suite. What a totally romantic experience! The room was spacious and had the finest of amenities! After a long day, the whirlpool for two and champagne package seemed like the most relaxing moment of our lives. We got a wonderful nights sleep in the comfortable King bed and it was topped off with an elegant breakfast fit for a queen! The Empress was the perfect spot to start our lives together and will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you Bob & Sharon, what a wonderful thing you have done for Little Rock! A definite must stay!!!!! A+++++++++++

We stayed in the Hemmingway suite for one night at the Empress. While we liked the property and overall enjoyed our stay, we had a few reservations. On the positive side, the property is extremely well kept. This is truly one of the nicest inns we have visited. The furnishings and fixtures are very nice and everything was clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is good reason this place gets good reviews.

However we had 2 reservations about this property. First, the Hemmingway suite (as well as the Majestic and Garden suites) are not in the main house. They are in a separate and much newer building across the parking lot. While we had full run of the house, we were disappointed that our room was not in the main house. Had this been listed on the website we could have anticipated such, but it was not listed. Second, they had a price tag on just about everything. I understand the add-on sale, but this was way overboard. I stopped counting after seeing 6 signs of items for sale in our room (such as chocolates, a disposable camera, bathroom spa kit, etc.). While they laid rose petals on our bed for the night (which was nice), they had a sign on the bed quoting a price for the petals. I paid much more than I normally do for this room and was really appalled by so much for sale.

Overall it is an extremely nice place and the people are friendly, but do question which building your room is in and expect to see prices on a lot of things in your room.

  • Liked — Well furnished
  • Disliked — The overwhelming number of for sale signs in the room.

We are always pleased when a guest lets us know they are displeased with something. And we were certainly delighted this guest loved their stay. We are disappointed they didn't know their room was in our most recent addition, The Carriage House, adjacent to the main building. It was clearly marked at the top of the website page since it was such a big event in our inns history. But we understand people are in a hurry and often don't pay close attention to what they are doing in these busy, busy days.

We also appreciate them bringing our attention to their thoughts on the items for sale in their room. We offer many items at our inn for free: complimentary juice, bottled water, coffee, wifi, parking, high end snacks such as trail mix and biscotti, and complimentary after dinner liqueur as well as a complimentary glass of wine offered between 5-6p.m. in the main building. But beyond that, we hate to put signs on things like our high end mugs, robes, and other items asking guests not to take them. Our thought has been if they see a price tag, they understand it's not a free item. (Early on in our innkeeping experience this was an expensive problem). We will take this into consideration in our future evaluations.

Exquisite! We had a delightful stay! My husband & I stayed in the Miss Eliza bedchamber. The Empress was a quiet sanctuary from the hustle & bustle of family Thanksgiving holiday. The owners were wonderful hosts; Mitzi, one of the staff, was a delightful hostess, as well. And the breakfasts! Oh my! They were entertainment in themselves! Each afternoon when we rejoined our family, their first question was, "So, what did y'all have for breakfast this morning?" They were two course works of art - pleasing to the eyes and nose, as well as to the pallet! The bedchambers are beauiful and comfortable. They didn't neglect the extras, either. Telephone, television, wireless internet, robes, iron, and hairdriers are in the room. Your choice of teas, coffees, and hot chocolate are available from a self-serve cabinet in the hallway & are available at all hours. Snacks and bottled water were also steps away from our room.

We highly recommend The Empress of Little Rock - what a jewel!

My friend Janet and I plan 3-4 days away from family and careers each fall, in fact this was our 19th trip. We chose to stay one night along our travels at the Empress of LIttle Rock, LIttle Rock Arkansas. Sharon Welch-Blair and husband Robert H Blair deserve unlimited accolades for their meticulous restoration of the Empress. We have travelled extensively and agree that the Empress is the most luxurious true to period small luxoury hotel that we have had the pleasure of enjoying. The Empress is easy to find off of I-30, south of downtown. Morning breakfast is again fit for queens and kings. We started out with pear sorbet on a grapefruit slice, our choice of coffee or teas. Freshly squeezed orange juice, gran marinar pancakes, apple smoked bacon, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and grapes finished our bounty. Mitzi was our server and made us feel as if we truly lived at the Empress and her goal in life was to serve us...The secret room in the attic, the secret garden, the beauty of the Empress will be again visited by myself along with my mother and aunt on a future respite. Pure luxory, beauty and relaxation are jewels of the Empress.
One note about the spa in the secret garden...it needs attention.

Wow! My husband and I have stayed at the Empress a couple of times, and it was wonderful both times. The rooms and the building in general are exquisite. The house, which has been fabulously restored, is an attraction in itself. The breakfast is also really special, and the owners are very friendly and informative. I highly recommend the Empress if you are looking for something really special, particularly for couples. We don't generally spend the night in Little Rock as it is usually a day trip for us, but when we are staying overnight for some reason, we will definitely consider the Empress, especially for an anniversary or other special occasion.
