“Nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

Location was very convenient to the subway. Hotel is located across Central Park. There are 2 stores nearby where i was able to get muffins, bagels etc for breakfast. The rooms are tiny, reminded me of hotels in Europe but for what I paid, I'm not complaining. I'd stay here again the next time I visit NY. If you are familiar with the hotels in Europe then you will be satisfied but if not then maybe you need to look elsewhere. I stayed in a 2 single bed room. It was small, the bathroom was small, the a/c was extremely loud but like I had mentioned earlier, the location was great and also the price.

We've spent in this hotel four days in the very begining of our US road trip. The hotel has great location just across street from Central park and few blocks (3min walk) from subway and about 11minutes walk to the M60 bus (direct shuttle to LaGuardia Airport). Employees are very helpfull and friendly, the room is nothing really fancy but you get for you paid for - the bed was large and clean, A/C was working and the bathroom was (tube with shower) clean (and just a little worn off). We used the hotel just for overnight sleeping but we were very satisfied ... (paid 120$ ex tax for queen size bed). Our room was located on the 7th floor and it seemed like that from the 7th floor is the "new part" of the building.

Room Tip: Rooms starting at 7th floor may be better.

As a solo traveler, I didn't want to pay loads on accommodation. I see a hotel as a place for sleeping, washing and as a base for exploring. This hotel was very ideal for me, simply because it was not in the hustle bustle of the city centre.

With it being next to Central Park, and not in Times Square, I was guaranteed a good nights sleep with no traffic or people noise. The subway was very handy for getting in to the main parts of the city. If you aren't brave enough to get on the subway it was only $13 in a yellow cab.

Only negative I found was that I couldn't work out how to use the shower. I should have asked at the reception but I was content using the bath in all honesty. There was no canteen or bar but they did recommend a cafe on Columbus Avenue called Crepes - which was a fantastic place.

My bedroom was big enough for me and I was quite surprised at how much room I had to be honest. The window view was non existent but it didn't bother me.

Summary
If you want luxury and city centre then avoid, however if you're like me, and want a good night sleep in a safe neighbourhood at reasonable prices, book this place. My top tip is to book via American Airlines website for best value.

I guess for the price and location it wan't too bad.

The place was not great with filthy soiled and torn carpets on the landing. The rooms were not much better, but at least the noisy air con worked, the shower worked, and the bed linen and towels were clean and fresh.

There was a Turkish deli about 100 yards up Central Park West road which was handy for free wi-fi and great coffee and food.

The hotel is straight across the street from Central Park and is handy for the underground station on 103st about a 10 minute walk in downtown direction, (turn right as you leave the hotel). Just use the Blue C Line and make sure you go downstairs once through the station ticket barrier and follow the signs for "Downtown" on the level below.

The staff were very helpful and couldn't do enough for you. For example we had to phone to check in for a pre-booked trip and the staff did all that for me at no extra charge when they could have billed me.

Lots of tourists staying here, and guess cost was a factor in this.

A great base but tatty round the edges.

Room Tip: We just asked for a quiet room as we read that the elevator was noisy and wanted to be away from the...

Not the nicest place I have ever stayed but... Very clean, friendly helpful staff and a lovely walk into the hussle and bussle of Times Square. If you are on a budget you couldnt go wrong its everything you need, a place to sleep after a busy New York day. We went as a family and had rooms next to each other. We arrived early and the staff looked after the luggage, they sorted out a car to take us to the airport. The little Deli nearby ( top of the park near the subway) did a lovely BLT for breakfast along with a coffee which was lovely to sit in the park and enjoy.

I used to live nearby here and like Astor on the Park because it is an authentic NYC neighborhood experience, away from the tourist masses. This is a mixed/diverse neighborhood - doorman buildings along Central Park West, brownstone walkups, and a big (not scary) housing project; Dominicans, African Americans, and whites; somewhat fancy restaurants as well as bodega sandwich shops and pizza joints. The neighborhood is the Upper West Side, or sometimes called here the Upper, Upper West Side, or SOHA - for South of Harlem (gotta love those NY real estate agents).

The best things about Astor on the Park: right across the street from Central Park! The A/B/C subway lines are a two-minute walk and the 1 line is a five-minute walk to Broadway and 103. And it is a slightly faded but sophisticated and attractive enough place at what are, for Manhattan, rock-bottom prices.

With the subway and plentiful cabs it is easy to get around greater NYC from here. Also very quick trip to LaGuardia if that is how you're coming in. Neighborhood attractions include Central Park (lovely walk to The Met and other park attractions), restaurants and nightlife (a lot of which are concentrated around Broadway), Morningside Heights (including Morningside Park, Columbia University, the famous Hungarian Pastry Shop, Cathedral of Saint John the Divine), the "Seinfeld" diner, and Harlem.

This is not the place for you if you require a giant room and full-service amenities like room service, hotel bar/restaurant, dry cleaning on site, 50 channels on cable, etc. But if you are looking for a convenient launching pad and prefer locals to hordes of tourists in Times Square, and would rather spend your money on dining and sightseeing than on sleeping arrangements, this is a great choice.

In August 2013, my nightly rate was about $135. Rooms include private bath. One unusual aspect of this hotel is you need to book not directly with the hotel, but with a reservation service (online or call), and you have to pay for your stay in advance. There are a number of services that will book for you, but maybe the best one is easyclicktravel.com - I believe they have the primary booking contract with the hotel, so you can probably get a better rate with them.

There were mostly foreign tourists last time I stayed here, and also it gets a lot of Columbia University families, as Columbia is nearby.

I have stayed here one time before and I will probably stay again, next time in NYC!

Astor on the Park was a great place to stay for people visiting the city. It is cheaply priced for NYC, located across from the NW side of Central Park in a safe neighborhood, and was generally everything you would want for a stay. The bedroom and bathroom were clean, the bed was comfortable, and the accommodations were "European": very compact and just what a person or couple needs to shower, sleep, and dress for touring. It is not luxury, but if your luggage remains in a hotel room all day while you are out exploring this is the place for you. Very quiet and located 3.5 blocks from a subway station. I thoroughly enjoyed staying here for my first NYC visit. The front desk staff is a little cold, but the cleaning service through the day was great.
