“Great Location sham about the noise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

Hi, Just returned from staying 3 nights here also. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, rooms small but thats all you need. There is 3 buildings currently having work done, one straight across from the front door, the other 100m yards to your right as you walk along to Macy's and the other in the street right behind. The work starts at 5.30 - 6.00am every morning, noneed for a wake up call or alarm clock!

Room Tip: I was on the eleventh floor and could here everything

I stayed for 5 days with my teenage daughter in july 2011 for our first trip to NYC
This hotel is in a great location 10-15 minutes from Times Square 1 minute from Macys and 15 seconds to subway Herald Square
room size was fine rooms were clean i did bring earplugs but they were not needed breakfasts were great set up for the day staff were friendly and informative we didnt eat here in evening as we were always out walking around getting value from new york pass
the free coffee (and hot milk as daughter added our drinking chocolate) was well used
this hotel was all we needed would definitely use again we got taxi from airport best option for us as fixed fare as herald square links with penn station but a heck of a walk with heavy suitcases but do use subway as its great to get around
highlights manhatten walking tour times square &greenwich village, top of the rock soho for shopping

Recently spent 10 nights and experienced 3 rooms so got a good view of the hotel.
Firstly, I like to judge a hotel on two main elements (which if they get right all other issues are insignificant): comfort of the bed and noise.
The bed was fine but the noise was terrible. We spent the first night on the 11th floor, of the 12 storey building, in a street front room and it was up there with the worst night's sleep I have ever had. 35th St is essentially the rear entrance to the large retailers on 34th St so there is almost constant delivery trucks and people yelling from early in the morning. Combined with a construct site in one of the stores made for an extremely loud street on top of the already notoriously loud NYC.
Now, you would think that in a loud city that experiences freezing temperatures in winter that an important design element in a building would be well insulated windows? Not at Hotel Metro! It was almost as loud with the windows open as closed because they were so poorly sealed around the cheap looking window frames. They couldn't even close enough to snib the locks.
On a plus side the hotel did upgrade us to a larger rear room for the second night onwards, in which we could still hear the noise but if we left the AirCon on all night it was drowned out.
The other party in our group were in a street front room which was noisy but they weren't able to move away from due to unavailability. They were provided with a weird noise making machine, that looked like a telephone answering machine and made different noises such as the ocean, frogs, white noise, etc. So they obviously know about the noise issue and that seems to be their solution rather than fixing the windows... strange.

Positives?
Very central location with a great view of the Empire State from the roof top bar
Despite what other people have said I think the rooms were quite large
Beds were comfy and the sheets changed every day
Towels also changed every day (which I think is a waste)
Free breakfast was a surprise
Very friendly staff
Well connected concierge
Noise from hallway and other rooms was very minimal
Great showers with 3 different shower heads which could be chosen or 2 at once!

Negatives?
Extreme street noise made worse by terrible windows
No curtains, which would have helped block the noise, just roll down blinds
A bar fridge that doesn't chill, but is apparently more to store drinks rather than cool them (weird!)
Breakfast on paper plates with plastic cutlery was a bit cheap
Seemed a bit pricey at almost $500 (incl tax) per night for a room on a weeknight

Conclusion?
Please Hotel Metro, save some money by not changing the sheets and towels every day and not providing a free breakfast (both totally unnecessary), and use the savings to install proper windows with well insulated frames!

Room Tip: Request a rear room on an upper level!

Can't beat the location, five minutes to the Empire State and two minutes to both Macy's and the Subway.
Hotel very clean and the staff are attentive and courteous. Nelson on the door was superb even getting us a brolly for a rainy evening. Complimentary breakfast did not disappoint.
If I have one minor complaint it is that the rooms are on the small side. That said you don't go to New York to stay in your room.
Definately recommend it and would return

I have twice stayed in the superb Hotel Metro, and I am in the process of booking my third return visit for December. Having stayed in other Manhattan hotels, this has now become my preferred hotel. Last year, myself, my mum and cousin booked into a family room which met our needs perfectly. I had informed the hotel that it was my cousins 21st birthday and first visit to NYC and they treated her to a lovely bottle of cava, chocs and very nice card.
The room is large by New York standards and the continental breakfast (free) sets you up for a day of sightseeing and shopping. All the staff were accommadating and gracious. The location of Hotel Metro is spot on. My mum has a walking disability and she could easily access Macy's less than a block away. The view of the ESB was amazing and although there was some street noise at night, it never disturbed us as we were always exhausted after our fun filled days out. I highly recommend this hotel and I cannot to return in 2 months time.

Stayed here for 4 nights from 27th September. We arrived very late at night and had a quick check in by Andrew, who was very friendly and welcoming. I think we were given room 906, which I have to say was disappointing. It was spotless and nicely decorated, but there wasn't room to swing a cat. We had a suitcase each and literally could not have stored them or opened them both at the same time. We were aware that this may be the case as we had booked the hotel as part of a package with a tour company, so were not expecting one of the premier rooms.

We requested a bigger room and were told that if we checked in the morning, they should be able to help. True to their word, the next morning Rosa was able to move us to a slightly bigger room which was much better (room 516 I think). We were facing the construction across from the hotel, but this did not bother or disturb us at all. Rosa was extremely helpful and I appreciate her help. The room was serviced everyday and could not fault it, I also want to mention the cleaning lady who was on duty on our last morning (1st October) who was so nice and allowed us to take our time to pack etc, as we were past our check out time.

Overall, hotel is in a great location, spotlessly clean, staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and a great continental breakfast included in the room rate. Would definately stay here again and would recommend it to anyone visiting NYC, but would maybe take a premier room instead.

Room Tip: Book one of the premier rooms for more space

We learned of Hotel Metro NYC through reviews here. There was a positive pattern to the reviews. We agree with those who say it's a good springboard location for your NYC stay. Easy access to subway, rooftop terrace with view of Empire State Building and included breakfast are all perks. I'd say the front desk service was average at best. The person we dealt with first wasn't particularly pleasant. But the two hotel concierges we dealt with were excellent. Maid service was very good, too. Rooms clean, comfy bed. Nearby Herald Square nice place to sit out and watch crowd. Duanes pharmacy nearby. Good spot to pick up cheap beer to drink on hotel rooftop after 9:30 p.m.
