“A Firm Favourite Hotel”

I've stayed at this hotel 3 times now, so that will give an indication that I like it. Lots of great artwork around the place (and in the rooms). This hotel has rooms to suit every budget, from dormitory rooms right up to high quality suites. I've always stayed in a 'superior' room as they are called. Friendly staff and multi-language concierge.
This hotel is in a great location just off 5th Avenue, and very close to the legendary Flatiron Building. The Empire State Building is only a few blocks away and takes 5-10 mins to walk there.
I recommend this hotel to every budget.

I stayed here back in 2005 and know of people who have stayed here since. It's all about location. Nothing glamorous about the place itself, except to say it's clean throughout the whole place. It's only 3 blocks from the Empire State Building and next door to the Sex Museum right on Fifth Avenue. The staff were friendly and helpful. As I say, nothing glamorous about the place, very old New York building with very old amenities, but it is clean. The price is very good also. I would recommend this place, however have your eyes open.

Room Tip: Rooms are quiet throughout, just no view out the windows at all..

My partner and I recently spent just over a week staying at the Gershwin Hotel, and we were really impressed. The location is excellent; right on the corner of bustling Fifth Avenue, just a couple of blocks from the Empire State Building and close to the 28th Street Subway station, meaning that popular tourist areas such as Times Square, the Natural History Museum, the Statue of Liberty ferry and even Coney Island are within easy reach.

The hotel is currently undergoing renovations, but do not let that put you off. We were rarely disturbed by noise and the rooms have been decorated to a high standard. We stayed on the 9th floor, and whilst our room was not exactly large, it was tastefully decorated, with a comfortable bed and an excellent walk in shower. Little extra touches, such as a fridge, safe, and iPod dock were also appreciated.

All the staff we met were unwaveringly friendly and helpful, and we're were always welcomed back on an evening with a smile and a greeting.

If I could make one criticism it is that there is only one elevator currently servicing the whole hotel, and it is rather slow and small. A couple of times we ended up having to take the stairs down from our room, which meant navigating building sites on the floors below which are being renovated, and getting in the way of contractors. I really hope that new elevators are part of the plan for the Gershwin, as this would really be a great improvement.

All in all, we had a really positive experience staying at the Gershwin, and I would definitely recommend it as a comfortable, stylish and pleasant place to stay in New York City.

Having spent hours trying to find somewhere to stay in New York that was reasonably located and didn't break the bank, we stumbled across the Gershwin. It's undergoing some major renovation so we requested one of the "new" rooms, which was stylishly decorated and spotless, albeit so small that we could barely fit ourselves and the suitcase in at the same time. And there's one lift which is really slow. And it's a 19th century building so don't expect high-rise views. But. The staff were enormously helpful and friendly, and the location is fantastic. There's wifi in the rooms and guest macs in the lobby. There's no breakfast provided, but just round the corner there are cafes where you can have everything from sushi to fruit salad to fried eggs - what a revelation! Let's face it, you're unlikely to be coming to New York to stay in your hotel room all day so for a pleasant experience in a top notch location, then the Gershwin absolutely does the job.

Room Tip: Renovated rooms were very good, albeit small. We met another family who were staying on one of the...

This is a real gem of a hotel situated right in the Flatiron district just around the corner from the Empire State Building. I shared a twin room with my friend and while the room was not huge, it had very comfortable double beds, lovely soft sheets and a design with real attention to detail - tiles with a musical score on in the shower, powered USB outlets so you could charge cameras etc with no adapter, a docking station and alarm clock for iPods and iPhones...

The renovation of the hotel has produced somewhere really distinctive and chic and we found it great value for under £100 a night in central Manhattan. Also we found the front desk and hotel staff very warm and genuine, if not perhaps the slickest operation (but that really didn't matter!)

Our only issue was a lack of hot water one morning when the boiler on our floor broke down, but this was fixed by the afternoon and could have happened anywhere. I would definitely use this hotel again if returning to NYC.

We weren't looking for a 5 star Hotel. But we found 5 star everything here. What a great caring staff they have there. Our new room was very nice. The air con was new and perfect. And my wife and I loved the glass shower. I wish we could've took the bed home with us also. Everyone was so pleasant and nice it just helped kick start your day. Will definately go back. Thanks to all!!

Hotel rooms themselves are ok, but no views of the city at all. And the room themselves feel dark.
The concierage staff is not that helpful and they barely speak english which doesnt help the situation.
Don't expect the bellman to bring your bags right away or to have ice brought to your room immediately; took them at least 30 minutes for each request. Seemed to only be 1 person working on a Saturday.
To top it all off, there was a water issue in the AM and we were unable to use any of the bathroom facilities! We were disgusted and the concierge staff was not apologetic or helpful.
