I'll start with a summary, because there is one thing you need to know. This hotel is absolutely fantastic - we found NO faults during our stay here - it could not have been better.
We arrived on September 4th after a long flight from the UK. The hotel entrance is somewhat small and it becomes clear after entering that this is a very tall and narrow hotel with a lot of floors but only a small number of rooms on each floor. Not to worry - there are three elevators located in the lobby which take you from the Lower Level all the way up to the 33rd floor.
When we arrived, just after 12pm we were greeted warmly. We were worried that our room would not be ready as the hotel's check-in time is actually 3pm. However, the receptionist said that this was not a problem and a minute or two later we were checked in and in the elevator ascending to the 29th floor and our room, number 2901.
The room was absolutely spotless and was furnished quite tastefully. Everything worked - we did not have to call in maintenance once nor did we require anyone else's help with our room during our enitre five night stay. The two double beds fitted quite comfortably into the room although I am led to believe that it is small by US standards. It was certainly a lot larger than many rooms I've stayed in while in the UK!
One thing which I was very pleased to see was that there were plenty of electrical outlets in the room. Perhaps a little odd but I enjoy the flexibility of being able to connect my laptop/mobile phone where I need it rather than where there is an outlet.
Speaking of my laptop the room rate included complimentary "high speed" internet which is achieved through a small box located on the desk. They provided an ethernet cable in the desk drawer so no need to bring your own. The internet speed itself was about a half megabit and by UK standards this isn't high speed but it is more than sufficient for checking email and sending messages home.
The beds were fantastic - each one was prepared daily for us very professionally by the maid who must spend hours of her working week fluffing pillows so they are just perfect. Each bed had five pillows on it and they were very, very comfortable.
We did not sample the hotel's dining facilities - we were in New York for pleasure and found a very nice place on West 40th St. called Pax Wholesome Foods who prepared breakfast for both of us for less than $12 per day. It was delicious and just one block from the hotel.
We were surprised to find that this room did not include a minibar as is common in Europe. Instead the hotel provided a small refrigerator in the bathroom which was perfect for storing canned or bottled drinks. I thought this was a very nice touch as it allowed us to keep drinks cool for when we returned. It certainly beats paying extortionate rates for the drinks or snacks the hotel thinks you might like to have.
The room was VERY quiet and in fact while in bed we could not hear the world outside. It's incredible that it was so quiet given its extremely central location.
The shower was located over the bathtub but was very comfortable and included two heads - one adjustable rainhead one and another which you could remove from the wall and hold in your hand. Yet another nice touch from Marriott.
The LCD television provided is clear and large enough to view from both beds in the room. There were around forty channels to view although most were US ones. In addition there were about ten Sirius Satellite Radio stations to choose from on the TV. A small CD player/clock radio was provided by the beds too.
This was our first visit to the USA, our first outside of Europe and our first with Marriott. To say we were satisfied would be an understatement. We paid $329 per night for our room and while this may be expensive from our perspective it certainly was not for a hotel located literally two minutes walk from Times Square (which friends have commented is the "centre of the world"). We could have paid much more for a stay at Hilton, Sheraton or W hotels, all of which had a much bigger façade but I think that this is probably the best value hotel on Manhattan island.
If you are considering this hotel don't hesitate. If I go back to New York I won't need the services of TripAdvisor which led me to this hotel, I'll know to book it right away, it really is that perfect.
