the location of the Mayfair can NOT be beat! right across the street from Chicago, 1 1/2 blocks from the R subway ( which we took everywhere). but, it's 106 yrs old, and it shows.
since it was our anniversary, we asked for a nice room. after cramming 2 of us and 2 suitcases into the only elevator ( the size of a small closet), we got to our room, which was claustrophobic, to say the least, and the A/C didn't work. i knew i couldn't spend 3 nites here, so we called, and got a room change. this was about 3:15, and check in was 3, so i was surprised to hear that they'd assigned all the larger rooms. we got room 401...even tinier, a FULL bed, not the queen they promised, and 2 windows ( one in the bath--very grubby lookin floor in the shower :( ) that overlooked a brick wall about 4 ft away. we literally didn't know if it was day or nite! but, watching the pigeons was interesting...
the room had a comp. computer, but we couldn't access AOL, and after repeated calls, we figured they didn't care if we could or not.
we checked out sunday AM, and they required the we pay to store our luggage then, rather than later, and seemed to not be concerned when we arrived @ 5:30 PM to head to the airport that the person w/ the combination to the luggage room wasn't there.( the reason for the prepay?) when we asked if we could cash a check to pay for our cab, they said they didn't do that. WHAT?
Finally, we got our luggage, and found our own cab and headed for the airport.
would i stay there again? dunno.
