This hotel looked beautiful from the posted photos and location. The staff was really super, but we moved to another hotel after our first of a booked three nights stay. Even though their rooms & elevator were tiny, this property could be a gem, so close by the theater district, if only some attention were given to maintenance & cleanliness. --KT

the location of the Mayfair can NOT be beat! right across the street from Chicago, 1 1/2 blocks from the R subway ( which we took everywhere). but, it's 106 yrs old, and it shows.

since it was our anniversary, we asked for a nice room. after cramming 2 of us and 2 suitcases into the only elevator ( the size of a small closet), we got to our room, which was claustrophobic, to say the least, and the A/C didn't work. i knew i couldn't spend 3 nites here, so we called, and got a room change. this was about 3:15, and check in was 3, so i was surprised to hear that they'd assigned all the larger rooms. we got room 401...even tinier, a FULL bed, not the queen they promised, and 2 windows ( one in the bath--very grubby lookin floor in the shower :( ) that overlooked a brick wall about 4 ft away. we literally didn't know if it was day or nite! but, watching the pigeons was interesting...

the room had a comp. computer, but we couldn't access AOL, and after repeated calls, we figured they didn't care if we could or not.

we checked out sunday AM, and they required the we pay to store our luggage then, rather than later, and seemed to not be concerned when we arrived @ 5:30 PM to head to the airport that the person w/ the combination to the luggage room wasn't there.( the reason for the prepay?) when we asked if we could cash a check to pay for our cab, they said they didn't do that. WHAT?

Finally, we got our luggage, and found our own cab and headed for the airport.

would i stay there again? dunno.

This is a gem of a hotel for the price. Steps away from Times Square and in the middle of the theatre district. Yes, the room was small, but it was comfortable. The bathroom was fine- elevator VERY small, but it works. Staff very congenial. I would stay again in a heartbeat.

This is the second time my husband & I have stayed at this hotel. The general concensus is that for the price, you can't beat this hotel. And I have to agree whole heartedly. It is so conveniently located.
Many people have reviewed the hotel and complained about the noisy air conditioning, small rooms & old elevators. But, my feeling is that you're not staying there for these reasons. You're staying for the convenience to all that New York has to offer. My husband & I love NY and we would stay here again in a minute!

So I was a bit skeptical about staying here, because many of my friends say Im a little high maintenance for this hotel. But I absolutely loved it.

I went to NYC in April 2007 on my 20th birthday. I arrived on my birthday and well as soon as we got there Bruce the doorman was very helpful and took our luggage for my friend and I. We had a little mishap when we first arrived but everything got fixed right away. Then we got to our room. We expected it to be small but being from California I had never seen a room that small. Despite the small room it was very clean couldnt have asked for more.

To top it off they had asked at the front desk why we were visiting and we told them for my birthday. After being in our room for 20 minutes we opened our door and Bruce the doorman and other staff had a cupcake with candles lit. It was nice and at any other hotel I wouldnt have had this experience. They were extremely nice and helpful

I recommend anyone to stay here.
