I stayed for 2 nights at the Moderne in mid-December and was very impressed by the service, cleanliness, and uniqueness of this hotel. I feel that I have discovered a hidden gem and can't wait to stay there again. For the last 6-7 years, when visiting NYC, I've usually stayed in a suite at the Manhattan Club, which is a few blocks from the Moderne, and I can honestly say that the overall customer service experience and price-quality ratio of the Moderne are much better than the Manhattan Club's. I think the Moderne is an outstanding value, and I love that it is a boutique hotel (with just 37 rooms, I believe).
First of all, I would like to give a special shout-out to Victoria at the reception. She is AMAZING and will go the extra mile to help guests.Thank you, Victoria for helping me out with my lost cellphone situation. I really appreciated your efforts. I also cannot say enough about the other staff and the manager. Prior to my stay, Ashley, the manager, responded to my e-mails the same day! Thank you, Ashley. Vladimir, who was working the overnight shift, Angie (who was filling in the front desk, and who usually works at one of the Moderne's sister properties), and Reinaldo, the doorman, were very nice and helpful as well.
I stayed in Room 702, and it was great. Extremely clean, well appointed, and while not large, comfortable enough for up to two people. I especially loved the heavenly rain head shower and the bed! The mattress was as comfortable as my bed at home; I am picky about mattresses--lol, like the princess and the pea--so I appreciated that the mattress was not too firm and not too soft. It was perfect! I also liked the toiletries and appreciated the space in the mini-fridge where I could keep bottled water and snacks.
Other amenities I enjoyed included: use of the hotel's Ipad. When I lost my cellphone (thankfully I did get it back the following day, after some hassles and issues with a major department store on 5th Avenue where my phone was being kept), it was great to be able to borrow the hotel's Ipad to check emails and let people know I was without my phone. And I also visited the guest lounge (open 24 hours a day!) which has fruit-flavored water and apparently muffins and cake in the morning (I never got there early enough to try them, but have heard everything is very good). During my next stay, I plan to make more use of the lounge. I can see myself relaxing there with a glass of wine or enjoying a light breakfast. What a great idea to have a lounge, especially since most of the Moderne's rooms aren't that big and are on the dark side (no natural light in most of the rooms and in my opinion, the lamp lighting is too dim to do any lengthy reading, work, etc.).
As for what could be improved, as I mentioned, the lighting. My room faced a tall building next door, so even though it had a window, there was no natural light. If the hotel could put some brighter lamps or install some track lighting on the ceiling, that would be good. I would also strongly suggest adding a light (even the kind you touch to turn on--no electrical wiring required) in closets, especially since the safe is located there. I needed to use a flashlight to program the safe, In addition, and as other guests have noted, the safe is not bolted to the wall, which is odd, I would move the safe to a higher position along the back closet wall and attach it securely to the wall. Another minor thing is the shower door. There is a partial glass wall between the shower and bathroom floor, but not a full door that you can open and close or slide to keep water from getting all over the floor. Other than those hings, I loved the room, and because it was on a higher floor (and not next to the elevator), it was extremely quiet. So, I would recommend that you ask for a room on a higher floor and avoid the ground-level floor; I met some guests who said that they didn't sleep well because of the noise on that floor. I myself was not upgraded to a suite (which has windows overlooking the street), but have read other TripAdvior reviews mentioning that; I do hope to have the chance to stay in one of the Moderne's suite, especially if I'll be staying more than a few nights, since getting natural light is important to me.
All in all, it was an excellent stay. Thanks again to the Moderne's staff for making my last stay so pleasant. I look forward to a return visit soon.
Ask for a room on a higher floor.
